4 Cool (free) Tools for Classroom Assessment
Greetings Blogosphere!
I hear teachers talk a lot about a lack of time, so I’m always looking for short cuts to share. So, here are 4 cool tools to use to save time at figuring out what your students know and can do.
- Rubistar is a free online rubric builder. You select the topic and dimensions and Rubistar does the rest. You can save them on Rubistar, or copy and paste into a document to keep for later.
- EasyTestMaker is a free online test generator to help you create your tests. You can create multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, matching, short answer and true and false questions all on the same test. You can also insert instructions and divide your test into multiple sections.
- iQuiz Maker is an easy way for you to create custom quizzes for the iQuiz game for the iPod. (Yes, for iPods!)
- Discovery Education™ Quiz Builder allows you to incorporate video clips into interactive quizzes.You probably need to belong to the Discovery Educator Network for access, but membership is free and it will connect you with loads of other teachers… so go ahead sign up and tell ‘em you read about it on the Assessment blog.

I like Rubistar because you can create something and go back and modify it for another use. You can also get ideas from other teachers rubrics and incorporate those ideas into your rubric.

I always use Rubistar whenever I need a rubric.

Rubistar is awesome although mildly limited. Sometimes I use it to get an idea about how I want to grade something, almost as more of a brainstorming tool than for the actual rubric.

Rubistar is great! It is easy to use and it is quick.

Another to add to the list is proprofs.com. They have a section called quiz school in which you can create online quizzes that students can take on the website. The great thing is that it provides instant feedback for both you and the student. You can analyze specific question to see the big topics most students are struggling on to know what you need to reteach. A student could also go in and look at what questions they got wrong so they know what to study before the test.
