Needle in a haystack of chaos

This has been a difficult tech week for me, for the second time in two weeks I had to tell students and teachers that their data would not be able to be recovered. It was a very disheartening experience.

I am having a very difficult time making inroads with the teachers in my building and now I can see why. They don’t trust the technology and frankly at this point, I can’t blame them.

How am I supposed to get them to embrace something that doesn’t always work? As I was told by a teacher ” I always know where pencil and paper are,  no one has to back it up because it is physically in my hands.” What do I say to that? At this point I have no real answer because technology has failed these students and teachers.

How do I get them to look beyond the bad things that happen and show them the good? We have 4 doc cams and 4 LCD projectors for check out. 3 have been checked out, but there is no waiting list. No one is willing to take a chance on using the new technology when their overhead projectors work all the time. Again, how do I fight this?

In the middle of all this I did have at least one success. A class that has never reacted positively to an assignment, actually really enjoyed class! They were all working so hard and they were engaged! I was so excited! I think it had something to do with the rain forest background music keeping the room calm.

If you look hard enough you can always find a success amongst the challenges, you just have to look around.
