Discovery Channel Global Education Partnership

So…. I just found out today that I was selected to be one of the Discovery Communications  Ambassadors to the Discovery Channel Global Education Partnership learning centers in Soweto, South Africa!   I don’t have a lot of details yet – but it looks like I will be heading over to visit the school site in the late winter/early spring – and I’m so excited I don’t quite know what to do with myself.

I’m thrilled and proud to have been selected for this – - but beyond my "I won a trip to South Africa!" hysteria, I’m more excited about all of the possibilities we have to connect DEN classrooms with classrooms in Soweto.    In the last few hours, I already have been given a number of ideas from other teachers for project ideas during this trip (do a web-broadcast into a US classroom, start a penpal exchange, teacher exchange, video exchange, etc).

I’ll be posting a lot more about DCGEP and this program going forward – but for now — I can’t wait to hear your ideas for what we can do to make this the first of many international learning opportunities for the Educator Network!

Hi Betsey: That is a wonderful opportunity for you. I hope as you plan and explore the logistics for this work in Africa, you may be able to find out more of the possibilities for linking our school in Uganda, the Arlington Academy of Hope and Arlington Traditional School in Virginia. Your enthusiasm is great for the project! Great news!!

Heartiest congratulations, Betsy. This will be an exciting project for you. Your enthusiasm and absolute zest for working globally make you perfectly suited for this undertaking. I am sure you will definitely be the perfect ambassador to open up many doors of communication, leading ultimately to fantastic relationships between educators and students located on both sides of the great pond! Excellent news!!

Congratulations on what sounds like the trip of a lifetime. While there, I was wondering if you would consider exploring how educators in South Africans might differ from educators in the US with regard to students with disabilities. Have fun!
