The DEN at PETE&C

Cimg0470_1 The Discovery Educator Network hosted multiple community building events in the Sweetest Place on Earth this week.  Lance Rougeux, Field Manager for Pennsylvania and Delaware (Lance_Rougeux@Discovery.com), did an outstanding job planning activities for Discovery Educators at the Pennsylvania Educational Technology Expo and Conference (PETE&C)

On Sunday, over one hundred Discovery Educators representing five states participated in a full-day pre-conference session which included professional development, networking and lots of fun.  As Steve Dembo referenced in an earlier blog post, this really was a conference within a conference.  From keynoters Kathy Schrock and Hall Davidson to breakout sessions hosted by both Discovery personnel and Discovery Educators (special thanks to Tom Medved for leading several sessions on digital editing) educators shared ways in which technology can enhance Cimg0433_1 teaching and learning.  Later that night, Discovery Educators who won the “Dinner with Kathy Schrock” contest joined Kathy and Hall for even more food, fun and networking.

However, the energy and Discovery spirit did not stop there; instead, it continued throughout the entire conference.  On Monday, Hall provided an inspiring and humorous look at the changing world in which our children live and our unique ability to embrace today’s technology.  On Tuesday, Kathy shared unbelievable resources and discussed ways to utilize primary sources in nearly every content area.  Hall and Kathy truly raised the bar of the conference and best of all, are both genuinely fun and caring people (aside from being brilliant).  During the concurrent sessions, several Discovery Educators shared their expertise with conference attendees including two sessions of “Fishing the Digital Stream” and “Creating Multiple Paths to Learning.”  Specials thanks to Discovery Educators Jim Hopton, Peggy Barger, Jeff Reed and Jennifer Dorman!

It was a great few days and although I am exhausted, I am really still on cloud nine.  Having come off two incredible community events in Texas and now in Pennsylvania, I look forward to my next…see you in Virginia!
