This summer, Discovery Educators from all over the Midwest have the opportunity to attend a 4-day DEN Regional Institute in Chicago, Illinois. The title of the event will be “Digital Storytelling: Where Learning Comes Alive,” and it will be a great opportunity for Discovery Educators to learn new ways to integrate technology into their instructional practices as well as share their own ideas with colleagues from all over the Midwest.
The overall content and scope of the DEN Regional Institute will vary depending on the interests and expertise of the participants, but some possible topics and focus points for digital story projects might include:
- Selected ethnic neighborhoods and cultural diversity
- Chicago architecture and its impact on urban growth
- Public art and sculpture in the “Loop” and parks
- Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium
- Millennium Park attractions
The Midwest DEN Regional Institute will begin in the late afternoon on Sunday, June 25th, and will conclude on Wednesday, June 28th by mid-afternoon. The Discovery Educator Network will cover the cost of lodging and specified meals during this summer event. Participants will be responsible for travel expenses to and from Chicago. Plans are still being developed, but some of the entertainment possibilities we are exploring include a dinner cruise on Lake Michigan or at the new Millennium Park, a trip to the popular Navy Pier, and music and food at a unique Chicago restaurant. There will be a maximum of 50 participants for this event and, since we will invite DEN members from as many as nine states, it is very important to submit your applications early.
