Back to School with STAR Status

Denhero150On the last day of August many of you are celebrating a successful first week or two of school while others are getting ready for a post-Labor Day start to the new year.  As you ready your classrooms with new posters (especially that really cool Meerkat Manor one) and bulletin boards, and get your first month’s lesson plans in place, while also setting up your rosters and grade books, don’t forget another really important back to school essential…your STAR status!

I’ve talked to a bunch of Discovery Educators this week about what you need to do to keep your STAR status.  Essentially, you have to show that you are active.  One way we measure that is by checking to see if you’ve reported at least two events in the past year.  Since we  launched the STAR level last year, there are many of you who need to report two events from last year, while others don’t have to do so until this year (starting now).  For all the details, here are the links to a couple blog posts that will tell you what you need to do and when.

Keeping STAR status for 2007-2008

What is an event?

If you have any questions, let us know.  And, don’t worry.  We’ll send out a final reminder soon to anyone who needs to fulfill the requirements for staying a STAR this year.

Have a great weekend and check your inboxes for the DEN Weekly Updates that will be starting again next Friday.

I want to thank Discovery for sending the Meerkat DVD and poster. We are using the DVD with our Olweus Bully Prevention Program. Children watch the Discovery video and then work in teams contrasting the Meerkat Manor rules with our Bully Prevention Rules. This is a wonderful way to encourage inclusion, cooperation and kindness among the student body. Lance, please pass this on the Discovery Animal Planet people. Peggy says “Hi” Jim Hopton

All the teachers in my building are jealous of my Meerkat Manor poster! I have had it laminated and am hanging it proudly in the front of the room!
    Thanks!

I love being a Star DE but I am finding it harder to host an event when we have so many “Stars” on our campus. It seems like everyone’s got a piece of the pie. Any suggestions with those of you that may have the same situation.

The link doesn’t work. Where/how can I report events. I have some already and don’t want to forget about posting them…
