A little northern exposure for the DEN

Last week I had the amazing opportunity to travel to Alaska to help get the Anchorage School District started with Discovery Education One Place and streaming. I am still processing the overall experience and really don’t know what my favorite part of the trip was because everything was incredible. As you can see, the view walking into the school district headquarters is surreal.

The staff at ASD were incredible. Unbelievably welcoming and kind. The teachers, tech coordinators, curriculum specialists and other educators who attended our week-long series of sessions were so enthused with the resources now available to them. AND…they are excited about the DEN! I see a leadership council forming very soon. I also see the need for another trip to AK to help get them started. Anyone want to join me?

On a personal note, I did manage to get a little sightseeing in. The extra four hours I gained coming from the east coast helped a lot with that part of the trip. Also, in a stroke of incredibly good luck and bizarre coincidence, I met up with a friend of mine from Villanova University who just recently won a Milken Award for the fantastic stuff he is doing with his students using geospatial technology. He agreed to host a webinar for the DEN.  Our DEN team is always working the angles for our STARs :)

So, if you’d like to welcome ASD to the Discovery family, or just make a jealous remark about the fact that I got to go to Alaska for a week, please comment below.

Looking forward to engaging teachers with a webinar for Discovery. Great to be “working” with you again Lance – it has been some time! You and your wife better come back this summer for some flyfishing and geocaching.

Warm greetings to you all from snowy Alaska! We think you should ALL come to Anchorage and help us really kick off our DEN in style :-)

Alaskans know how to appreciate the wonderfulness of new and old friends, and we do know how to have fun (aka PARTY). As the saying goes, we are all a little “off” here in Alaska, and we like it that way – this keeps us sane during the long and dark winter months, and appreciative of the beautiful wilderness in which we live. Do I hear a road trip to Alaska in February for our statewide conference???
