Increase Your Vocabulary + Feed the Hungry = FreeRice.com

Thanks to CA DEN member Kathleen for passing this site along.  Basically, as you go through a multiple choice vocabulary quiz, for every question you get correct they donate 20 grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Program.  If you begin to miss questions, it will automatically adjust your vocabulary level.

As I played this morning, I had Google open on one side of my screen and the game open on the other.  I simply typed “define: _____” and would instantly have the correct answer.  However, some I had to read through several different definitions in order to accurately predict the answer.  I couldn’t help but think what a great activity this would be for students.  Math= Every time you get an answer correct 20 pieces of rice…. am I hearing multiplication and division.  Language Arts= Seems to be the most obvious of course for vocabulary, but I also spent a lot of time reading through a variety of definitions and not always was it the exact word.  I had to be familiar with synonyms.  Technology= What a great way to teach kids to search for definitions and the different tools available to them on-line.

So… go play @ www.freerice.com  and let us know how much rice you earned!

This is very fun – my principal had kids doing this in the lunch room two weeks ago.

    Here is my experience: http://malcore.wordpress.com/2007/11/08/free-rice-dot-com/

Got that social studies aspect too with the “charity” piece. And marketing – those companies listed at the bottom – how do they get there. Some good discussion starters.

Glad to see it shared here!
