Discovery Education’s Young Scientist Challenge: Coming Soon for Students and Discovery Educators!

Discovery Education’s Young Scientist Challenge is the premier national science competition for students in grades 5 through 8. In 1999, Discovery Communications launched the competition to nurture the next generation of American scientists at a critical age when interest in science begins to decline. Over the past nine years, more than 540,000 middle school students have been nominated to participate in the competition. Winners have gone on to speak in front of members of Congress, work with the nation’s top scientists, and pursue academic careers in the sciences.

This year both students AND Discovery Educators will be able to compete.

Students

Between March 1 and June 15, 2008, students in grades 5 through 8 will be challenged to create a one- to two-minute video about a specific scientific concept which they will select from a list of five concepts provided by YSC judges. Video entries must demonstrate the student’s understanding of the scientific concept explained and his or her comfort level discussing science in general.

Discovery Educators

We are excited to announce that, in addition to the student challenge, 2008 will feature a teacher competition. Beginning March 1st, science teachers who are members of the Discovery Educator Network (DEN) are invited to enter. DEN teachers will be asked to submit a video entry, as outlined in the rules on the official entry form.
In late summer of 2008, judges will select the five teachers who will receive an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, DC for the competition finals. Teacher finalists will compete in a series of individual and team challenges, some of them in front of a live audience. At the end of the competition, judges will award the top teacher with a very special prize.
