Immersed in Technology

Cheryl at the FDR Memorial.

This week, along with a few of my fellow Michigan DEN members, I have had an amazing opportunity for professional development. I have been attending the DEN Leadership Council Institute training at Discovery Headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, as I have never had the chance to attend an institute in the past. I have to say, I have been totally blown away. The opportunity to not only connect and network with my fellow leadership council members, but to connect and network with DEN members from all over the USA has been an awesome experience.

We have had an intense amount of professional development in many different areas, that for one of the first times in my life I am close to being on technology overload. The tools that seem to be ubiquitous at this point are Geocaching/GPS units, Flip Video cameras, Twitter, Second Life (both on the computer and cell phone via Vollee) and Digital Storytelling with green screen. New tools that are just making their appearance are Plurk , Mogulus, and Qik. These tools, both the old and new kids on the block, seem to offer an unending opportunity to expand my personal learning in a variety of ways.

I am confident that the connections that I have made with people are not going to fade away when I board the plane and head for home. Several collaboration projects, as well as Michigan DEN events are in the works and being developed.

I guess it is time for me to strap on my seatbelt and hold on tight. I think I’m in for the ride of life this school year!
