Monthly Leadership Council meetings always bring about new resources or remind us of resources that we need to revisit. Hub Discovery Education is a great storytelling website for K-5 teachers. This site offers a comprehensive set of lesson plans for K-2 and 3-5 as well as a step-by-step guide to the writing process. All lessons are aligned to the Common Core State Standards Initiative, the Standards for the English Language developed by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), and the International Reading Association (IRA). There are also activities for families to support the writing process at home.
Taking it Digital has phenomenal resources to help you take your story digital. Digital Storytelling 101 provides an overview of the basics and process of digital storytelling. Storyboards, rubrics and examples are plentiful. The tools and resource section has collection of Web 2.0 Tools that are worth checking out. Don’t miss Jen Dorman’s Digital Storytelling links!
Using the tools that students have learned in class, encourage writers to enter The Hub Create a Story Contest. Working in groups of 2-4 students the writers will collaborate to create a 2 page engaging, creative story. Student work will be showcased on Hub for Teachers and the teacher of the winning group will receive a prize pack. Good luck!
