Bracing for the Storm

This winter has been full of harsh weather; snow, high winds, and ice. I am currently sitting in the Chicago Discovery offices dreading the inevitable blizzard of a lifetime.  Why focus on the weather as a theme within your lessons?

In addition to Discovery Education’s videos we have a huge variety of media assets.  Have you used our encyclopedia articles?  I bet that the students in your classroom have never even seen a collection of encyclopedias. Wipe off the cobwebs from your encyclopedia collection and bring it to the classroom. Show students how accessible and current the digital encyclopedia at compared to the outdated stack of encyclopedias.

Use this as an opportunity to focus on careers studying the earth’s atmosphere. A starting point for this topic may include a basic encyclopedia article. Take a few minutes and  generate a word cloud which will help student’s extract the main ideas from the article.

1) Go to and log in

2) Type the word Meteorology in the keyword search box

3) Filter your search by choosing Encyclopedia Article

4) Copy the text

5) Go to

6) Hit create and paste the text from the Encyclopedia Article.

Ta Da!  You have your very own word cloud!

Great question Mary. Luckily Wordle is free but it does lack the feature of saving on their site. What I did was take a screen shot of the completed Wordle word cloud. I saved it as a picture file as a jpeg. Then I inserted it into the blog.

Climate change is a significant and lasting change in the statistical distribution of weather patterns. I am also doing research on the same subject. Your post is very helpful for me.
