Students less than “proficient” in physical fitness

Thank you to all who have made my first month in the DEN so outstanding. My name is Jason Altman, and I am the new DEN manager for assessment. I am looking forward to getting this blog going in the coming weeks, so please check back frequently. I promise there will often be something new. In addition to my work in education, I’ve also worked as a high school cross country running and track and field coach for 9 years. I still run and bike slowly myself!!!

Today I read an article that converged on two of my interests, physical fitness and assessment. Unfortunately it wasn’t good news as I read that only one of every three children in the state of California could be considered “proficient” on the state’s physical fitness tests. As bad as news has been in math and reading, students are also now testing alarmingly poorly in physical education.

“Today’s results are clear: When only 31 percent of children are physically fit, that’s a public health challenge we can’t wait to address,” said state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson in a statement I read at www.SFGate.com. The entire article is available at http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/11/30/MNUN1M6BBT.DTL.
