Invention Convention: A Look into African American History

Black History Month is important for all students no matter their race. African American history is in fact American history. Help your students understand the importance of some of the extraordinary individuals of African American History by putting a fun spin on the lesson.

Lesson Title: Invention Convention: A Look into African American History

Ask your students: What are some things we now use in our everyday life that were invented by an African American?

This is a lesson that can be taught across all ages. See some great lesson plan ideas below, that will engage the students in learning about African American History.

Elementary School Students:

1. Use Discovery Education to locate things invented by African Americans.

2. Locate pictures of these items, as well as some items that were not created by African Americans, on the internet and print the pictures.

3. Cut these pictures out and play a guessing game with students.

Divide class into teams.

Have groups vote on whether or not they think each item was invented by an African American.

Award the winning team a prize.

4. This can also evolve into other activities like a matching game or even a puzzle made by Discovery Education’s Puzzle Maker.

 

Middle School Students:

1. Use Discovery Education to locate things invented by African Americans.

2. Locate pictures of these items on the internet and print the pictures.

3. Cut these pictures out and secretly assign each student a picture.

4. Have the student go home and conduct a short investigation on the invention, using Discovery Education to find the:

Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?

5. Allow students to give a short presentation to their classmates on this item.

*This activity can also be done in groups by assigning each student of the group what information theu are responsible for locating.

 

High School Students:

1. Have students use Discovery Education to locate things invented by African Americans.

2. Challenge students to use the resources to create a short 5 minute Power Point presentation, using at least 2 types of content (video, songs, puzzles, pictures, etc.) available on the topic.

3. Have students present to their classmates.
