Well, we did it! Kyle Schutt, the amazing team at Discovery Education and Dr. Lodge McCammon completed the first ever Discovery Educator Network / Dr. Lodge Music Video Challenge. The challenge launched in late January and for about three months classrooms across the US and Canada prepared, filmed and submitted their 1-take music videos. The students learned the dance moves to Dr. Lodge’s curriculum based songs by watching videos called Kinesthetic Lectures, which helped them actively learn about science, math or social studies. The students then took those dance moves and added to them in order to create their unique presentation of the information.

We were all blown away by the amazing creativity that went into each submission and there were so many excellent music videos. So much so that our panel of judges had quite a difficult time selecting the top 15 finalists.
Once the finalists were selected and posted it was up to the popular vote to determine the grand prize winner. At 11:57pm, just three minutes before the voting period was over, two videos had the same number of votes. However, Jeff Collin’s 5th grade class received one additional vote in the final minutes of the voting period, securing the win for Pleasant Union Elementary School and their music video about the order of operations. Kyle and Dr. Lodge visited Pleasant Union last Friday to host an awards assembly for the winning class. Watch the assembly: http://youtu.be/lUGVIb5Vask
They also interviewed Jeff Collins (teacher), Kevin Biles (principal) and the students about their experience with the challenge. Watch the interviews: http://youtu.be/iJp6I8PSAm8
Dr. Lodge and the students ended the day by creating an “unplugged” version of their winning music video about the order of operations. Watch the “unplugged” music video: http://youtu.be/bhNamiJGpJ4
Once again, congratulations to Jeff Collins and his 5th grade class!
