Texas DEN STAR Ruby Aguilar shared some of her great news with us and we’re sharing it with you. Ruby was selected to participate in the Community Historical and Archaeology Project with Schools (CHAPS) program at the University of Texas Pan American (UTPA) in Edinburg, Texas. This NEH-funded program selected twelve educators from across the Rio Grande Valley to learn about the history of the region and taught us how to use history as a backdrop for lessons in other disciplines.
She began with two weeks of classes last June. Then, met on a monthly basis this school year to discuss how she has developed and used lessons in her classrooms. On March 23, 2013, she will present her 5th grade Science lessons at an education conference at UTPA. The lesson plans and PowerPoint presentations will be uploaded to the internet and the lesson plans will be published.
This program has shown her the value of place-based education and ways to use it to help her Title I, ELLs to understand 5th grade Science by starting with the history of the world around them.
