You may have seen the internet’s ubiquitous frowning cat on Facebook, or on Reddit, or maybe even at South by Southwest (aka SXSW, the annual music, film, and interactive conference and festival held in Austin) where Grumpy Cat recently made a special appearance, but did you know that Grumpy Cat isn’t actually grumpy?
Grumpy Cat, a female domestic shorthair and internet celebrity, gained her famously frowny face due to feline dwarfism and an underbite. Her owner, Tabitha Bundesen, states that Grumpy Cat (real name “Tardar Sauce”) wasn’t bred in any special way to give her such a unique appearance, and that her parents are two normal sized mixed breed domestic shorthairs. She is undersized, and has slightly stubby back legs, but aside from her distinctive facial expression, is a perfectly normal cat.
Grumpy Cat’s booth at SXSW (where she was carefully supervised by her owner at all times) drew massive crowds, where fans (and celebrities) lined up blocks away, and waited over three hours to have their picture taken with her. As you can see above, Grumpy Cat even took time out of her busy schedule to take a photo with the fishing boat captains from Discovery Channel’s hit show, Deadliest Catch.
Now, the next time you see Grumpy Cat, you’ll know that at least she’s smiling on the inside!
