While Joli Barker is an elementary school teacher at the Slaughter Elementary School in McKinney, Texas, her title does not come close to ending there. Barker proved her candidacy through her active participation in numerous educational conferences and by holding a variety of positions across educational events and councils ranging from a member of the DEN TX Leadership Council to a presenter at 2013 DENapalooza. In addition to being a STAR member of the Discovery Educator Network, her blog Fearless Class Room, which shares small moments of inspiration to transformative teaching, is in the works of being published as a book. Her awards include TCEA Classroom Teacher of the Year 2013 and ISTE Outstanding Teacher of the Year 2013, along with a nomination for a Bammy Award in 2013.
Through attending different educational conferences, Barker takes digital tools (specifically DE Streaming, DE Science Techbook, DE Assessment, DE Science Elementary) and integrates them into the classroom curriculum to strengthen and enhance student learning. Aside from serving her students, Barker extends herself to the greater educational community of teachers, parents, educators, and administrators in enhancing education overall through her creation of a global reading club and a digital media competition involving the Magic Tree House Book Series. Furthermore, she encourages and inspires other teachers to follow her lead in utilizing digital tools in classroom practices and teacher trainings and to give children nation-wide the opportunity to have a positive effect on the world.
