Greetings, DEN community! My name is Katy Stankevitz and I am the newest social media intern here at DE. This summer I’ll be building buzz around upcoming events, using #DENfitfriday to inspire myself and others to work out and of course, sharing Discovery Education news and announcements with you through sites like Twitter and Facebook.
I’m a Green Bay, WI native and in the fall I’ll begin my senior year at UW-Madison where I study journalism with a focus on strategic communication and digital media. In my spare time I like to drink too much coffee, cheer for the Packers, talk about Game of Thrones and write for CollegeFashionista. I spent last semester interning at Time Out magazine in Sydney, Australia (there’s also a Chicago publication) and fell in love with big city life and the Pacific Ocean. Although the Midwest isn’t quite as warm as Oceania, I look forward to exploring Chicago, swimming at a less-salty beach and learning about the best places to eat, relax with a book and enjoy some live music in the Windy City.
I was drawn to this position at Discovery Education not only because of my interest in social media but also the promotion of technology and media in schools that Discovery Education is such a huge part of. In Fall 2013, I was the public relations manager of a student-run non-profit called Savor South Madison. SSM has the dual purpose of promoting locally-owned restaurants and increasing technology literacy in the south Madison area. This experience opened my eyes to how influential media is in our everyday lives and how technological illiteracy is hurting both children and adults in today’s competitive world. I am a true believer in the work that the DEN community does, and am so excited to be a part of it!
