Fun Fact Friday: Eyeglasses For Chickens

Eye_Glasses_For_ChickensDid you know that in 1903, an inventor patented a pair eyeglasses to be worn by chickens? It’s true!

According to Wikipedia, inventor Andrew Jackson, Jr. patented the first pair of chicken eyeglasses. Really though, they are more along the lines of safety goggles. The intent was to prevent chickens from being pecked in the eye, but a newspaper column (see right) also touted the added benefit of giving a flock of chickens “a very intellectual appearance”.

Some varieties were actually tinted reddish, so if you ever hear someone talking about a chicken in rose-colored glasses, they might not be referring to the bird’s positive outlook!
