Welcome the DE Summer School special edition of SOS. Our S.O.S series provides help, tips, and tricks for integrating DE media into your curriculum. During August, we’ll be featuring our STAR Community’s favorite strategies and how they have made them their own.
Special thanks to DEN STAR and 2nd grade teacher Patti Harju (@scout7) from St. Stephen School for sharing how she brought this SOS to her students.
I have used this strategy in a couple of different ways. As the technology teacher I only see the children for 30 – 40 minutes twice a week. I try to work with the classroom teacher as much as possible and integrate what I am doing with what is going on in the classroom. What I like about the 3 Truths, 1 Lie Strategy is it can be easily used in one class period, by any age student, and can be used with any subject. I have used it as the prompt for a blog post, but it can also be used with other tools such as DE Board Builder, Blabberize, Tellagami, as well as simply a paper and pencil or partner activity.
Kidblog Post Introduction
During our first week of school, 3 Truths, 1 Lie was the perfect way to get the children started using their Kidblog and helped me learn a bit more about each of them.
After introducing the Kidblog to the students, giving out the usernames and passwords, they were asked to write 3 Truths and 1 Lie about themselves and post it on their Kidblog. When completed they were then asked to read several classmates’ posts and leave comments as to which one was the Lie and give a reason why. It was fun to listen to the students as they read their classmates posts, thinking they knew the lie, and sometimes were correct and other times found they had learned something new about a classmate. This was an easy first Kidblog post, a great way for the kids to get to know each other and feel comfortable writing and commenting on Kidblog posts. It was a nice opportunity for me as the new tech teacher to learn about the students and leave thoughtful comments as well.
The Solar System
The 5th grade students were learning about the Solar System. They used a variety of resources, including Discovery Education to learn more. They viewed and responded to several of the DE videos including;
They were given an assignment by the classroom teacher at the culmination of the unit.
I noticed the beautiful illustrations and reports hanging in the school hallway, and as the technology teacher who only sees them for 30 minutes twice a week I thought this was an excellent opportunity to use the SOS Strategy: 3 Truths, 1 Lie to help them process what they learned and to encourage them to look more carefully at the projects of their classmates. The students were to use what they learned from their project work to write a 3 Truths, 1 Lie Kidblog post. They were also to upload the illustration they created to accompany the Kidblog post. Next they were asked to read the posts of their classmates and leave a comment as to the lie.
