Welcome the DE Summer School special edition of SOS. Our S.O.S series provides help, tips, and tricks for integrating DE media into your curriculum. During August, we’ll be featuring our STAR Community’s favorite strategies and how they have made them their own.
Special thanks to DEN STAR and 5th grade ELA and SS teacher Jessie Beth Miller (@mrsjbmiller) from Greene County School District for sharing how she brought this SOS to her students.
I love this S.O.S. for history. The 2-1-4 breaks down to this: 2 Facts, 1 Clue, and 4 Pictures. I used this strategy at the beginning of my lesson on the Great Depression as a hook, or to inspire curiosity. I began by putting my two facts up on the overhead to see if the students could collaborate and guess as to what we would be learning. Then I put up the clue. Lastly, I flipped over to 4 images from Discovery Education’s vast library. The whole thing took about 5 minutes, but the students were engaged and eager to learn more. I can definitely see this being used in all classes for all ages.
