If you read last week’s Fun Fact Friday, you already know that the ISSpresso coffee maker was launched into space, and due to dock with the International Space Station. What you might not know is what the machine’s intended recipient, astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti, wore to greet its arrival!
Cristoforetti donned a uniform from the television show Star Trek: Voyager. She tweeted the photo with this notable quote:
“There’s coffee in that nebula”… ehm, I mean… in that
#Dragon” (“Dragon” being the name of the freighter).
This is a reference to the Voyager episode The Cloud, where Captain Kathryn Janeway discovers that the stranded starship Voyager’s dwindling power reserves are endangering her morning coffee routine. You can see the scene below:
Another fun fact is that this is (probably) the first time that one of Star Trek’s space suits was actually worn in space!
If Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry were alive, he would surely be overjoyed to see his creation being celebrated by actual space travelers a second time (the first being the Space Shuttle Enterprise).
Roddenberry’s vision has truly lived long, and continued to prosper!
