Celebrating Our 100th SOS!

SOS Celebrate

We are very excited to celebrate an important milestone for our Spotlight on Strategies series.  This week’s strategy, Picture It!, marks the 100th strategy to be highlighted in our SOS Blog series.  What began as a simple conversation about how to best share and promote simple and effective media integration strategies with teachers has become an incredible collection of teaching resources that are being used by hundreds of teachers and students throughout the United States, Canada, England, and beyond!  Hats off to the many DEN community members who have contributed to this growing collection.

Spotlight on Strategies, or SOS as most of us know it, has come a long way in the past three and a half years!  The timeline below shows a few of the highlights, beginning with our very first SOS, 3 Truths and 1 Lie, which was published on October 1, 2012.  As the SOS became more and more popular, many of you started sharing it with your friends.  Consequently, in 2012-2013 many BulleDEN boards started popping up in school work rooms and teacher lounges across the continent.  In 2014, we were excited to publish SOS #50, but the DEN Community asked for more!  So, in 2015 we moved the strategies into Discovery Education content, and organized them by sub-skill, making it easier for teachers to find just the right strategy to use.  January 2015 brought a brand new look and feel to the SOS, thanks to DEN Guru Tracy Carpenter.  We also added the SOS Video Vignettes, which have become a key component to our strategy collection.

Timeline

In celebration of our 100th post, we have some special SOS tributes created especially for our DEN community.

  1. First, an SOS Hundreds Chart, with embedded links leading to the first 100 strategies within Discovery Education
  2. Next, a Padlet board with pictures that will give you insight and inspiration into what the SOS look like in action with students and teachers.  We’d love to collect even more ideas, so add your pictures to the Padlet, too!
  3. It’s time to put on your dancing shoes. Members of the DEN Leadership Council have created a few SOS sing-a-longs for you to enjoy:

Brandon Wislocki’s SOS Parody of “We Didn’t Start the Fire”

Traci Blazosky‘s SOS Parody of “My House”

Rita Mortenson’s SOS Parody of  “One Call Away

Cathy Houchin’s SOS Parody of “Lean on Me

We can’t wait to see what’s next for the SOS, and invite you to share your strategy ideas by completing this form so we can feature you in an upcoming post!
