Explore the history and traditions of the Valentine’s Day holiday. This program explains how the holiday originated over two thousand years ago in Rome as the festival of Lupercalia. The festival was re-named to honor the Christian priest Saint Valentine and became associated with romance in the middle ages. The history of Valentine’s Day celebrations in the United States is discussed, valentine-themed jokes are shared, and modern holiday celebrations for school children are described.

VALENTINE’S DAY POEMS: Watch this segment about Paz, the cutest little penguin, and the Valentine’s Day poems he made up for his friends. Write one of the poems Paz recited on the board so the students can use it as an example and invite your students to create Valentine’s Day poems for others. Give them the poem starter from the video and let them pick a recipient: “A Valentine poem for my __________ (friend +name, mom, brother/sister, principal, cat, etc.)…” and have them write the poems. Then, encourage them to recite the poems to the recipients.

VALENTINE’S DAY CARDS FOR EVERYONE: Using clip art as examples, have your students draw a favorite character and create greetings using alliteration or puns. Make a class gallery or have students place the cards into a basket, shake it up, and have each student pick one card to take home.

PROFESSIONAL VALENTINE’S DAY CARDS: Watch this short video about the history of Hallmark Cards and some of the jobs that are part of producing the famous cards. Then, invite students to create cards for each other (or family and friends) using various genres, such as humorous or sentimental. Students may create their cards individually or may form teams to mimic the structure at Hallmark: a writer, an illustrator, and a crafter.
