SOS Story: Elizabeth Merritt

The Spotlight On Strategies series (CDN subscribers) is one of Discovery Education’s most popular resources. First introduced 2012, these strategies help teachers use media in effective and engaging ways in their classrooms.

The best part about the SOS is that they are flexible and can be used across grade levels and content areas. We are excited for SOS Story: a new SOS series that spotlights teachers showing how they put the SOS to work in their classrooms.

merritt1Elizabeth’s SOS Story:

My 5th graders needed to shake things up a bit, and we were getting close to our school’s Spring Open House. I wanted them to showcase their knowledge of Natural Resources and the Earth’s Changes. In order to make sure all 105 students were represented in the project, I added a little twist by using SOS Paper Slide with Aurasma, a virtual reality app.

I first had groups from one class create posters of vocabulary words related to the topic. Students hung these posters on the wall.

Next, I had students in another class create paper slides explaining the various vocabulary posters.

Once the paper slides were created, we made the posters come alive with virtual reality. When parents came to open house they used the Aurasma app to see what was “inside” each poster!
