This year, 19 people came to CSD in St. Louis to attend the DEN virtual conference and learn from one another. By all accounts the event was spectacular and we even had a visit from an astronaut. Robert Powell from the Challenger Learning Center in St. Louis (http://www.clcstlouis.org/) stopped by to commemorate the 26th anniversary of the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion that actually happened on January 28th, the day of SCIcon.

Our December adventure lead us to the impressive Nelson Art Museum, after a very enjoyable breakfast and training session at Panera Bread. We visited the Ford Education Center and discovered the wonderful resources that are available for teachers, The museum has many hands on materials that can be checked out for classroom use. The materials are organized by the collections found at the Nelson. The Nelson is well known for their Asian exhibit and they have many resources dealing with the Asian culture. They also have a Native American, African and Egyptian collections as well as a very extensive Renaissance collection. Along with hands on materials, the museum has many resources on line. They also have many classrooms and lecture spaces available. We learned a great deal and some teachers were able to check out material and take it back to their schools. We also found out that there are four school districts that are eligible to bring classes to the museum for free and that bus transportation is also included. Check out the website http://nelson-atkins.org/ . Please make sure to check out this wonderful resource.

Hello Educators!

I want to extend a special invitation to those of you in the KC area to attend our exhibit, “Blindness Isn’t Black,” a VSA Missouri statewide touring exhibit of work by nine artists with disabilities. In 2009 VSA Missouri published Blindness isn’t Black, an anthology of work by 23 Missouri artists and writers with disabilities. As with the anthology, this exhibit demonstrates that work by artists with disabilities is just as varied and rich as any other diverse group of artists.

The St. Louis Riverfront Times summed up the spirit of the exhibit: The lesson inherent in Blindness Isn’t Black is that the person comes before the disability, and that humanity’s creative drive is a river that can be diverted but never dammed.

The exhibit is on display and open to the public now through April 22 in the Health and Sciences Building of Truman Medical Center 2220 Holmes (across the street from the main hospital).

Please join us for our Celebration of Access and the Arts on April 6, 7, and 8

Wednesday April 6 - group tours of the exhibit with some of the exhibiting artists. Some funding for school group transportation is available. Call me at 888-718-0866 to schedule. Slots are filling up so call soon!

Thursday April 7 – Open House 2:30 – 4pm. Music by Michael “Blind Cat” McIntire. Hear from the artists and writers in the anthology and enjoy refreshments! Groups welcome!

Friday April 8 – noon – 1pm Public concert by Blind Cat in the lobby of Truman Medical Center, 2301 Holmes

All events are free and open to the public thanks to funding from Arts KC, Truman Medical Center, Alphapointe Services for the Blind, The Whole Person, and Missouri Arts Council.

Hope to see you there!
