Tired of long urls?

There are many sites that will allow you to shorten the url address.  This makes it easier to remember as well as simpler to type for your students.  Want to see more? just Google shortened url- there are pages- but here I only want to mention two- tinyurl and bit.ly

I have been using www.tinyurl.com .Simply go got the site, paste in the long url address- and then either customize your new address or let them select one for you.  This is free, easy, no account- but you do need a good memory or a place to record your new shortcut. If you forget it, you cannot get it back.

I have  just started to use http://bit.ly Here you need an account (which is free) then the process is the same, paste in the long url, then either customize or let them select the address.  Here, since you have created an account, you can retrieve your shortcuts (as well as track the number of hits).  Bit.ly has increased in popularity – it’s now the default on twitter as well.

Which one to use? I think it’s a matter of preference- try both and see what works best for you! Or even better- which one will your students find works best for them.

For New Jersey Teachers only- web literacy online!

October 29th, 2009 · No Comments

This morning I attended a seminar with Alan November sponsored by the Center for Innovative Education at Kean and the NJ Department of Education.  The presentation was thought provoking and very informative (when I sort it out, I will post more).

During this session, Alan mentioned online classes available (via the Department of Education) and his company.  The topic? Three classes on web literacy!  They are free for the first 1000 NJ educators.  These are self-paced learning opportunities.  After listening to Alan this morning, I realized how much I really don’t know- but here is a chance to become educated. Click here for more information and registration.
