Let’s Make Some 2014 Predictions!

Screen Shot 2014-01-06 at 10.09.30 AMHappy New Year, Everyone!

This is a picture of the New Year’s Ball that has dropped in Times Square every year since 1907, except 1942 and 1943. (Can you guess why it didn’t drop in those two years?) Click on the Ball to find out more fun facts about the New Year’s Eve Ball at the official site of Times Square.

I thought it would be fun to start out the year making some predictions about 2014. What do you think will happen — weather, politics, entertainment, sports…it’s all fair game. Put your predictions in the Comments section. REMEMBER: Comments are moderated and only appropriate and polite comments will be approved and posted. Please, be kind to the moderators: don’t spam our space and use only your first name or your first and last initial.

One more thing about predictions — they’re a great thing to do as you read. In the middle of a story or a book or an article, keep yourself engaged by thinking about what might happen next… or at the end.

Can you predict how I’m going to end this post?

……………

Make 2014 a great year!

Hello — thanks for keeping up with the blog. If you click on the image and link to the Times Square site, you’ll find facts about the ball and the ball drop, including why they didn’t drop the ball in 1942 and 1943. You have to link out to that site. Happy reading!

They didn’t drop the new year’s ball in 1942 and 1943 because of blackouts.

I believe the ball wasn’t dropped because around the beginning of the 1940s World War II was going on and the ball probably didn’t drop because dropping the ball might make people angry. The ball dropping might make people angry because another year passed and we are still in a horrible war. Or people say Happy New Year and some people might think how is it a happy new year because again of the war.

Wartime required all the lights in New York City to be turned off so the ball was put away so New Yorkers applaued and cheered for the new year.

I skimmed through to find the answer to why it didn’t drop in 1942/’43. I KNEW it had to do with the war!

    1. I Think They Didn’t Drop It On Those Years Because They Had To Do Some Major Repairs On It To Make It Sparkly And Shinier.

    2. I Think They Didn’t Drop The Ball On Those Years Because They Wanted It To Be Safer When It Drops.

I think it`s because of both the blackout and the world war II pr perhaps New York was under attack and nobody knew how to turn it on and nobody paid attention to it
