Summer Series: Week 1 — ART

Today marks the beginning of summer at the Discovery Student Network and we’re launching our Summer Series with a week-long study of ART. (Next week’s topic is SPEED!) Each week from June – August, we’ll launch a new board, built in Board Builder, that will offer you resources and activities to keep you busy and interested over the summer. Use the Summer Series however and wherever you like: check out a few resources by the pool, sitting next to the fan in your dining room, at the library, or hanging out on your front stoop.

Each day, too, we’ll post the daily activity here. Keep track of the weeks you complete and get a certificate at the end of the summer!

Monday is IKR?! (I Know, Right?!) Day and here is the first Monday activity:

A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte

A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte

Did you know that Seurat’s painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte (right), isn’t painted with brushstrokes? It’s actually millions of tiny dots. It’s true!

Find out more about Seurat and his pointy paintings on the Summer Series: Art Board.

In the meantime, today’s challenge is to identify a scene in your own life that represents your community… sketch it… and then try to make a drawing or painting in all dots, like Seurat. Warning: this could take all day!

Hi Anna. Glad you think it’s cool. We’re just providing some activities for you over the summer (via boards available in your account — search “Summer Series”), so you can continue to have fun and learn with Discovery Education while you’re on a break from school. Enjoy!

Listen people, we now that picture. All of Messmore knows that. A dude painted that with dots. And if you look closer you’ll see a man’s side view!
