Washington, D.C. is a pretty large city that when you include the surrounding counties has a population of several million people. As with any metropolis getting around can be somewhat of a hassle. To assist in getting around in a timely fashion some guidelines have been setup to keep things moving.
One of these things is the guideline of Walking Left and Standing Right. This applies to primarily to the subway system that we call the metro. Within the metro system there are some pretty long escalators. If you want to stand while riding the escalator, it proper to stand on the right hand side. That way people that are in a hurry can walk up the escalator on your left. If you are with two or more people, stand in front of each so you don’t block the left side.
Walking left and standing right also applies to moving sidewalks in airports. When you think about it, it also makes sense on sidewalks, shopping malls and wherever there is pedestrian traffic.
