This blog post caught my eye. I have a somewhat long commute so I usually do most of my reading by listening to audiobooks. Head over to Tracy’s blog and read about Get Caught Listening and National Audiobook Month.

Find 14 Uses for Orphan Socks : Planet Green

Change is inevitable - Growth is optional.

And with that Discovery has changed also. The Discovery Home channel is going green. Actually they are going whole hog and changing from the name Discovery Home to Planet Green. One my first findings from this upcoming change is this post on what to do with all of those mispaired socks.

Take a look and help save the planet!

One Year Ago…

One year ago today I flew with NASA. That’s right I flew with NASA. Not into space abut pretty close. As a NASA Explorer school we are able to apply to conduct student experiments in microgravity by flying on the Reduced Gravity Jet. Our second graders wanted to see how playground toys acted in zero gravity.

After being chosen, we had quite a bit of paperwork and planning to do. You can see part of the process by looking through the archives of our team blog.

We had to fly down to Houston twice. In December of 2006 we underwent physiological training for the flight. That included a flight in a hypobaric chamber where we were deprived oxygen. It was only for 5 minutes. Very cool experience and we learned loads of stuff about Boyle’s law.

Anyway then we flew down in Feb. for a week long adventure that included the microgravity flight. We did 40 parabolas. The experiments took about 20 parabolas to complete. Then we were able to attempt some fun things that the kids asked us to do.

One of my teammates, Margaret Frick posted a video of some of the fun stuff on Teacher Tube.

Here is another site that allows you to make a screenshot of a website that you may want to include in your blog. Super Screenshot is easy to use. Just put in the url of the site you want to take a screen shot of. Blog entries without pictures are really boring so when I can, I try to include an image. Give this a try for your next share of a great web site.

Sometimes focusing too much on education can be a bad thing. Take for instance taking yourself too seriously. There are lots of blogs out there and not all of them deal with Education or Technology. Take a look at some these. If you add them to your feed reader then let me know what you like. also let me know what you don’t like. For me I just like hearing what other people think one way or the other.

HEY! Help A Friend Out!

I am proud to call Elaine a colleague and a friend. She is part of the DEN in SL LC and may be better know to you as Celestia Cazalet.

Elaine Plybon, blog coordinator for the Texas DEN Leadership Council, needs YOU! The Irving Independent School District in Irving, Texas, for which she works, has an annual Technology Media Fair. This year, the district has opened up several categories for online judging. The hope, above all, is that this will help keep district students excited about technology and about sharing their work with a global audience. This is where you come in. The contest is in need of judges. Anyone who has an interest in technology in education is qualified to be a judge. All the projects can be judged from now until January 7, 2008. There are six categories and levels from K through 12th grade. Anyone who chooses to judge can judge as many or as few entries as they would like. Would you consider helping with this cause? You can do so by judging, obviously, but also by sharing the word with other education professionals through your own blogs, twitters, feeds, and other social networking venues. The district would love to see judging from all over the world, so let’s get this DEN machine rolling!

To judge the projects, go to http://www.irvingisd.net/mediafaironline and click on the judging link. When judging, please include your name and email address. Your email address will not be published. It will be used for security only. Please expect an email from our administrative staff confirming that the address listed next to your name is a valid email address.

Thanks!
