I’ve been tagged by Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach, Randy Rogers and Kevin Jarrett to contribute to this meme. The idea is that you share 7 things about yourself that would be unknown to your readers. Here are the rules:
The 7 things you probably don’t know about me are:
So now it’s my turn to tag 7 people. If you’ve read my 7 things, stay tuned to read the next 7 things from these people. Don’t forget to tweet them or visit their blogs and let them know they have been tagged. Also make sure you go back and read the 7 Things about Sheryl, Randy Rogers and Kevin too.
Tag you’re it:
I found this fascinating quote today:
And that’s the other piece that I find absolutely fascinating. It often seems that most people that come up to me and chat after a presentation start up the conversation by saying, “I’m so far behind everyone, but I’m trying to catch up.” I couldn’t disagree more. In my experience, most educators are still FAR ahead of the curve.Teach42

» Best Educational Tech Support Edublog 2008 The Edublog Awards
I’ll admit that this category, Best Education Tech Support Edublog 2008, is LOADED with great blogs. But just in case any of the nominees in this category actually read anything that I write, I owe literally my entire experience with my professional and personal learning network to Steve Dembo at Teach42. If it wasn’t for his blogs here in the DEN and at Teach42 I would not have a PLN. Without him and his blogs we wouldn’t have a DEN in Second Life (also up for an Edublog Award by the way). So head over there and vote!
» Best Teacher Edublog 2008 The Edublog Awards
It is with pleasure that I encourage you to to head over to the Edublog Awards and place a vote for DEN member Vicki Davis’ blog “The Cool Cat Teacher” in the category of Best Teacher Edublog 2008. This list is massive and it randomizes for each person who clicks the link. Scan the list and look for The Cool Cat Teacher. Also share this list with your colleagues that might not read blogs. It’s a great list to learn from.
» Best Class Edublog 2008 The Edublog Awards
It is with pleasure that I encourage you to to head over to the Edublog Awards and place a vote for Dave Kootman’s blog “Mr. Kootman’s Class” in the category of Best Class Edublog 2008. Also share this list with your colleagues that might not read blogs. It’s a great list to learn from.

» Best Individual Edublog 2008 The Edublog Awards
It is with pleasure that I encourage you to to head over to the Edublog Awards and place a vote for Jennifer Dorman’s blog Cliotech in the category of Best Individual Edublog 2008. It’s quite a list and the names randomize with each click so search through the list for Cliotech. Also share this list with your colleagues that might not read blogs. It’s a great list to learn from.

I like to try different tools all of the time. It’s an addiction. Anyway, I thought I would share five tools that you can use to grab a screen shot r capture from a web page to use when you post to your DEN blog.
Kwout (quote)
http://kwout.com
Kwout offers a couple of ways to activate the screen capture process. One is via a Firefox extension and the other, the one I use most often, is by bookmarklet.
Click the bookmarklet and it loads a copy of the web page you were just on. Select the part you want to capture by dragging to highlight the selection. Then click Cut Out and you get sent to the next page. There you get to choose what to do with your capture. You can post to your blog using the embed code or post to several photo sharing sites or email it to your self or others.
Here is a sample from just posting it to your blog.

kwout | Firefox add-on via kwout
Screengrab
Is another Firefox extension. It puts an icon on your status bar at the bottom of your screen. You click this and have the option of copying or saving the complete page, the visible portion of the page or selecting the part of the page you want.
Here is an example of one that I saved and then uploaded to Flickr to use here.
Abduction
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3408
This is a nice neat little Firefox extension. On any page you only have to right click and choose Save Page as Image…
You then get a new window where you can make your selection. Save the image and you can upload it to a photosharing web site for putting it in your blog.
Here is a sample from Abduction.
WebShots
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6168
This is another Firefox extension. You activate this one by going to View-Sidebars-Webshots. It takes a screenshoto of the whole page. You can then save it. Then upload to your favorite photosharing site and use the pics in your blog.
Picnikhttp://www.picnik.com
I saved my personal favorite for last. Picnik is an image editing program that works online. It’s integrated with Flickr so editing images on Flickr is easy. They too have a Friefox extension. When you are on the page you want an image from just right click and select Send Page to Picnik…
Then when you are in Picnik you can crop or resize or use any of the many tools they have there to edit and perfect your image. Then you can send it again to one of the many photo sharing sites an post to your blog.
So what do you think? Give these a try or if you use something different that I should look at please let me know.

Splash for Trash: International Cleanup Day
Get your diving gear and wet suits out because the DEN in SL is going back to DIVE WORLD. To help raise awareness of Splash for Trash on September 20th in REAL LIFE, the DEN in SL along with PADI are going to host a virtual world cleanup on TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16th.
The folks at PADI have created an awesome scavenger hunt for the DEN members. Here’s the skinny: someone has put trash all over Dive World. DEN members will each be given a trash bag and then let loose to do their part to clean up the sim. The person with the most will win.
So here is the info from the DEN in SL blog.
Please join us on September 16th (NOTE: This is a Tuesday!!!) and our friends from Dive World. We’ll be meeting at DEN in SL HQs at 5 p.m. SLT (7 p.m. CST, 8 p.m. EST) sharp to teleport over to Dive World.
Join like minded environmentally conscious friends in Second Life and gear up for International Cleanup Day with this fun cleanup activity. Once you dive the depths of the beautiful waters of Dive World, removing marine debris as you go, stay and dance your virtual socks off on the beachside dance floor!
But the fun doesn’t stop there, get involved in the real world and volunteer to help make clean waters a reality and join the biggest underwater cleanup of its kind. Project AWARE is calling all divers, snorkelers and water enthusiast to make their data count and help reverse debris trends this September. About International Cleanup Day: Project AWARE Foundation spearheads global underwater cleanups during International Cleanup Day and year round. This annual volunteer event addresses the devastating impact of marine debris on the aquatic environment. Project AWARE empowers dive centers and individuals to clean the world’s oceans, lakes, rivers and shorelines. Volunteers take part in practical cleanup solutions and collect data which is vital for change.
International Cleanup Day is held annually on the 3rd Saturday in September but cleanup and data collection activities are supported by Project AWARE, partners and volunteers on an ongoing basis. In 2007 a total of 358,617 recorded volunteers helped Project AWARE clean 34,560 miles of shoreline and remove seven million pounds of rubbish.
To find a registered event in your local community visit https://www.projectaware.org/english/take_action/international_cleanup_day_locations.aspx
This event really sounds like fun. Hope to see everyone there.

TEXTANIM - animated text generator

This is a really fast and easy way to get some movement (not too much now) to your web page or blog postings. Just make your different choices and click GENERATE. You are given a preview and then a download link. I also liked the Preview link for the fonts. Clicking the preview link opened a new page with a preview of all of the different fonts you can choose from. It made picking a font very easy.
Here are some samples.
