Marijuana
“Miss, do they still do the drug dog around here?”
I paused in my explanation of the Chinese New Year.
“So far as I know they do.”
“Miss, when does the dog come around?”
“I don’t know. I think it’s random. Why?”
“Oh, no reason.”
During fifth period, Sharon and I graded essays together.
“You know that student I told you about? The one who just got two days of DMC?” (DMC is on-campus suspension.)
Distractedly, I answered, “Uh-huh.” I continued grading.
“Guess what! He’s in DMC for two days but on Monday he goes to JJ. He was caught with five ounces of marijuana in his locker.” (JJ is the juvenile justice system.)
Suddenly, my conversation with David takes on greater significance. Off I go to warn a counselor that David’s locker may need to be searched soon, really soon.
