Thanksgiving Feast

November 21, 2013

Today was the day I most look forward to every fall at school: Thanksgiving Feast Day.

And I skipped it.

Why?

The Thanksgiving Feast has changed since the state changed the nutritional rules to meet federal guidelines: 600 calories for middle school lunches.

The Old Feast:

  • turkey
  • dressing
  • gravy (white)
  • broccoli
  • green beans
  • mashed potatoess
  • corn
  • whole wheat roll with butter
  • cranberry sauce (whole berry)
  • 1 piece of pumpkin pie
  • (iced tea for teachers)

The New Feast:

  • turkey
  • white gravy
  • cranberry sauce
  • dressing
  • green beans
  • whole wheat roll, dry
  • corn

I think the cranberry sauce counts as a dessert. There’s no more pie but the meal now meets federal guidelines.

So I had a turkey sandwich instead.
