I’ll be working with K-5 students on new MacBooks during the next couple of weeks. It’s an introduction to the Leopard operating system and to the new set of 16 MacBooks recently acquired. I polled the staff using Google Forms to discover who would like to participate in this activity and to find suitable times for classes to meet with me in the media center. We will use digital images captured using PhotoBooth and insert them into a specified template in Pages to record personal information. Students will print to a specified campus printer and be able to take their ‘page’ with them. The action research I hope to collect will show that all ages can participate in one technology lesson and be successful with the desired outcome.
“Time is of the essence.”
“Time stands still.”
“What time is it?”
“If I could save time in a bottle.”
“Does anyone really know what time it is?”
As teachers time is at a premium.
No longer do teachers just teach. We wear many hats, that of teacher, parent, counselor, nurse, friend. Our time is spent doing numerous tasks:
We:
read notes
attend meetings
phone parents
counsel students
share concerns with colleagues
read cum folders
read email
attend parent conferences
write IEP’s and AIP’S
Have you ever felt that there isn ’t any time for you? And yet, we, as individuals need time too. Time to read and dream. Time to think. Time for our families. Time for friends. Time to just relax. Where can you find the time to accomplish all you need to do?
Try setting aside time for yourself each day. Make a ‘to do” list, prioritize what needs to be done. Things will get done, if not today than tomorrow.
Stay focused on what is most important. People are important. Time spent with students, parents, friends and family should be one’s priority. But not at sacrifice to oneself. Take time to be alone. Quiet time is needed in todays’ explosive information society. We are bombarded by so much and in such a short amount of time.
When can we process this information?
Sitting in traffic
waiting for supper
waiting in the grocery line
Find the time. Make the time. Watch a sunset. Smell the flowers. Make every minute count. Be sure you take the time!
I tried out VoiceThread to prepare a ‘reminder/review” for students. Our District purchased 16 MacBooks for student use this year. I’ve been trying to work out a schedule for giving the students reminders on policy and procedures. Time is so limited. After reading “Tuesday with Karen”, I decided to try VoiceThread. The teacher can show this to the class before using the MacBooks for the first time. I wanted to meet with classes for an optional PhotoBooth/Pages writing activity (All About Me). For me that is a better use of the time I do have. I will be modeling a use of the MacBook, two applications, printing options, and camera use. Such a timely “Tuesday with Karen” tip!
