Why do you think Ms. Abbott didn’t let Dexter change the topic of his story?  Why did she make him finish the story about the fight?

The last line of the book is “I don’t feel like hitting anyone anymore.”  What has changed that makes Dexter not so angry anymore?

Kristin Aquilino

Why do you think Robin is trying to get Dexter to like the people that were “mean” to Dexter, such as the janitor and the secretary?

Were they really mean to Dexter?

Why do you think Dexter thought they were being mean to him?

Kristin Aquilino

When Dexter is speaking to his father on the phone, he covers up the story he is writing about beating up Robin.

Why do you think he did this?

Robin opens up and tells Dexter why he was crying in the bathroom the day Dexter punched him.

How does Dexter feel about this?

Do you think Dexter is jealous that Robin gets to spend so much time with his mom when Dexter’s mom is so far away?

Kristin Aquilino

The first day Dexter is at his new school, he punches a kid in the bathroom and hates pretty much everything about his new school.

Why do you think Dexter punched Robin?  How would you act if you were a new kid at a new school?

When Ms. Abbott was talking to Robin on the playground, Robin lied to Ms. Abbott and said the fight never happened.

Why do you think Robin lied?  Would you have told the teacher if you were Robin?

Hi Boys and Girls!  Welcome to our first blog entry!  Your first assignment will be to read chapters 1-4 by November 16th.  I will have a timeline made for you that will show when each chapter should be read by.

Remember, when blogging, there are no wrong answers!  It’s OK if you and your fellow bloggers have different opinions.

Please review the pages on the right of the blog with your parents, especially Internet Safety and Blogging Rules.

So, below is the blurb from the back of book.  After reading it, make a prediction of what you think this book will be about.  Do you think you would have chosen to read this book on your own?

I’m the new kid. I am tuf. This morning I beat up a kid.

It’s only the first day of school for Dexter, but he’s already mad at the principal, and the secretary, and the janitor, and the kids who laugh at him. When his teacher tells the class to write a story, Dexter writes about how tough he is — and how he’s already gotten into a fight. Is any of Dexter’s story true? Why was the other boy crying before Dexter hit him? And why would the other boy still want to be Dexter’s friend?

Even Dexter doesn’t know the answers to some of those questions. But as he deals with family problems, a persistent teacher, and a boy who’s strangely interested in floor wax, he discovers many surprises hidden in his own tale.
