hey--excellent slide show, nice music (yes, I do like more than heavy metal!). I only heard about this all summer, I can't wait to sit on your hand-hewn porch and drink wine with you this weekend, both to celebrate your achievements in carpentry and your long-awaited marriage. No one loves you like I do--always, always remember that.

There is really nothing more blissful than fresh pesto on tomatoes that are still warm. My kids help in the garden and choose their own favorites; why don't the kids I teach in the classroom do the same? Why don't the kids in my neighborhood do the same?

Next year, I'm hoping chickens may be part of the equation. We checked them out at the 4-H show last week and my sons and I were entranced.

I saw all types of love: for (future) spouse, kids, nature.

Must be spectacular in autumn!

I hope your cabin getaway brings you joy and peace - once the "fun" of building and renovating is completed.

Wait, I was supposed to check myself into TwitterRehab after 1,000 tweets? Well, at 3,600 tweets and counting, I suppose I may as well keep on going. There's nothing that can be done for me now....I'm a lost cause.

I seriously think that twitter needs to very soon, STOP showing total number of tweets (who cares anyway?) and instead show something meaningful like average number of tweets per time period (like month or year). Yes, I'm at 3600, but I've been on for nearly a year. That's around 10 tweets per day. I'm okay with that. Really, I am. Now if I'd been on for only 3 months and had tweeted that much, that'd be a whole different story. I like my idea so much, I think I'll start a petition.

@Terry, Kate, Taylor, Diane and Dina-You all made me realize that there is a correlation to learning ANYTHING and the satisfaction you can feel after the task's completion.
I promise a post with PICTURES. Porch is coming next week-keep the toolbelts handy!
BTW Kate the red newts say hi.

Love it, love it, love it.

As you imply, our schooling is, in so many ways, anachronistic. We didn't learn about tools, gardening, and how to make salsa from scratch in school because we could once count on that knowledge as being generationally passed on, in every hour *not* spent in school. And now? Now we need school to make up the difference-- and school is still acting like we live close enough to the land. (Ironically, also the source of our precious summer vacation.) :)

Sounds like a perfect, peaceful summer. How will you bring yourself to leave the retreat & go back to school?

And when are you and your new hubby going to come visit us in the French Quarter?

BTW - do you know the french/spanish word "trianon"?

You must fall into a deep dreamless sleep at night!

I find, myself that I crave outdoor time, physical activity of even the mildest sort, in the summer. I revert to a more basic self, for at least part of the day.

Sometimes my best ideas (!) come to me when my corporal self is occupied and my mind roves freely.

Besides, EVERYTHING is fodder for teaching material. I'll bet you've read lots of instruction sheets (usually in English & Spanish), researched products, drawn up rudimentary schedules, etc.

Think of how eloquent you can be on the topic of self-sufficiency!

Linda -

Me, me! I want to hear about the slugs in your garden and all of the other stuff :-) I always talk about "non-ed" related stuff online because I am just ME online, not a representative for education. As for why we didn't learn any of it in school, that's a MUCH deeper conversation. One that isn't answered by traditional education in our country and one that won't be unless there are MAJOR changes in the future.

By the way, my kids and I picked blackberries on our walk this morning and I'll be heading out in the garden this afternoon.........Green living? Nope, just life as I know it.

There is much to be said about the things that you do with your own hands! "Visible, evident, and real" should not be discounted! I think the exact same thing can be said about that place we work (school) and the assignments we create. "Visible, evident and real" should be our creed when dealing with students! So I guess you accidentally said something relevant to teaching! Good educators always do that.

Enjoy the summer and the fruits of your labor!
