In September, I was able to participate in DEN Gone County in Nashville, TN. While I had the most fun and learned tons, one of the most memorable activities in which I partook was the Country Music Hall of Fame Day. It was there that I learned about the Words and Music Program. It is a free outreach Distance Learning program. Today, my co-teacher and I completed the 2 hour training that is required using Google Hangout. I had sent lyrics in advance. David Bogart (the head of this program) and Songwriter Claire Wyndham walked us through the curriculum, giving us pointers on how to teach song writing. Claire then put my lyrics to song. I felt a rush of pride hearing my lyrics sung in such a way! I just know my students will, too. We are scheduled to start the curriculum tomorrow and work on it until the Holiday break. We will then send the students’ lyrics to Nashville. When we come back to school in January, we will have the distance learning session in which 6-7 of the students’ lyrics will be put to music. This is so exciting; I would not have known about this amazing opportunity if it wasn’t for my involvement in DEN.
