DuPage Day of Discovery overview

Minneapolis Day of Discovery

Spent today with a group of educators from Minneapolis – St. Paul area. We flew through the “DE streaming Tour“, touched on the “50 Ways to Use Discovery Education streaming” and spent far to little time on our power-point projects.

We did, however, cover “Step-by-Step Become a DEN STAR Educator“, what I hope you will find to be the most important piece. As a STAR Discovery Educator you are now connected with the top educators in the country, all tirelessly working to promote the best in education.

I’ve already scheduled a follow-up activity, devoted to power-point presentations. Please join me on Wednesday, June 25 at 11:00 PM for the webinar. Click here to register.

Complete presentation from today, minus the movies(sorry they don’t upload well), please click here.

On a personal note, I really love Minneapolis, great city, easy to navigate, and vibrant downtown.  My first and second trip here were in the heart of winter.  Cold doesn’t begin to describe it.  This trip, fabulous weather, an amazing 77 degrees.  I walked from Sullivan Community School to the Metro without breaking a sweat.

The Moveable Feast: Week Summary

I posted Thursday evening, giving a very brief snapshot of the “Moveable Feast” taking place in Bloomington, IL. Here’s a little more information right from their website.

A Moveable feast is a one-week summer institute organized by the Office of Educational Technology at the University of Illinois. This project-based technology institute is tailored to meet the needs of training teachers and administrators in technology and emphasizes ways to integrate technology in conjunction with Illinois Engaged Learning standards.

There are 4 weeks scheduled this year and with the first week completed I can say this is an amazing PD for educators. If you’re in the Bloomington, IL area I encourage you to register for at least one of the two sessions still open.

Take a look at some the pictures here.

Green Festival Winner: Kankakee

Green FestivalWhat a great Saturday!  The sun was out and spring has actually arrived in Chicago.   I met up with an awesome group from Kankakee, IL and we toured the exhibit floor, grabbed some lunch and hung out with a few stars.  I put together a couple quick videos of the day.  Check them out below(I know youtube is blocked at most schools, so come back later and I’ll have it up so you can download the video and watch it).

Tracy Selock from Kankakee won the challenge for the day, receiving a bag full of prizes from Discovery Education.  She also won a half-day of professional development.   Congratulations Tracy and thank you for all your support.  If your interested in taking part in an a future event like this, click the link below and become a STAR Discovery Educator.Step-by-Step Become a DEN STAR Educator

Cedar Rapids Day of Discovery

Welcome Cedar Rapids

Back from an amazing two days in Cedar Rapids, IA. A huge thank you to Ann Nicholson and Jerry Cochrane for allowing Discovery Education come in and for hosting the event. We had 40 educators attend three workshops; the first one starting at 8:30 AM and the last ending at 7:00 PM. Educators that attended learned 50 ways to integrate Discovery Education streaming and how to use the assignment, quiz and writing prompt builders found in the Teacher Center of Discovery Education streaming. Everyone that attended was also given the opportunity to become a STAR Discovery Educator.

If you missed the event or attended and are looking for the handouts, just look below to find the presentations.

50 Ways to Use Discovery Education streaming document

Cedar Rapids Presentation

The documents above have everything except the movie files, just too big to upload here. I encourage anyone that attended to become a STAR Discovery Educator. Follow the steps in the above document and then spread the word. You’ll get a great STAR Discovery Educator baseball jersey if you get another educator to join. If you need help in explaining the DEN or simply have a large group that would like to know more, send them to batting practice. Well, sort-of. I host two webinars every Tuesday. It’s a quick, less than 30 minute, Discovery Educator Network overview. Click here for times and registration information.

Another thank you to everyone that attended. I can’t wait to return in the fall or before. Get a lot of STARs in your school and I’ll come out to do a workshop just for you.

Some pics from the day.

World Feel a Little Green Today?

Planet

Did you wake up a little greener today? Maybe? Today we celebrate Earth Day. People across the globe will refrain from flicking that cigarette butt out there car window on to the highway. The buses and trains will be a little more crowded than usual. You’ll bring your own organic cotton bags to the grocery store. You might even buy that stainless steel $20.00 coffee mug at Starbucks for your Caramel Macchiato instead of using their disposable cup. Will you keep the same habits tomorrow? How about the next day? Will doing any of the above help the environment?I’m not sure exactly what I should be doing as a responsible inhabitant of this lovely planet. I thought bringing my amazing Discovery Educator Network Water Bottle to work instead of buying the bottled stuff was enough. Apparently, I have much to learn. Good thing there’s a place I can go to learn more about being eco-friendly, the Chicago Green Festival. The Chicago Green Festival runs May 17 – 18 at Navy Pier, 600 E Grand Avenue.

Celebrating what’s working in our communities, green festival showcases more than 350 diverse local and national green businesses displaying and selling eco-friendly, fair trade and sustainable products. More than 150 visionary speakers appear for standing-room-only panel discussions, presentations and main stage speaking events.

Attention DEN STAR Educators!Join me on Saturday, May 17 for the Chicago Green Festival at Navy Pier. I’ll be there all day learning how to become eco-friendly, while eating a few cheeseburgers from “The Billy Goat Tavern“. To make it even more interesting, how about a few contests.

  1. The district that brings the most Future DEN STAR Educators, will win a half-day professional development session for that district. A prize worth $1,250.
  2. The DEN STAR Educator that brings the most Future DEN STARs will receive a gift bag full of Green items.
  3. Take the contest into your class. Chance to win a $1,000 grant from GM and Discovery Education. You must be a middle school teacher. Details are below.
