Chapter 7 - The way things are…
Roz tells a story about skiing on snow and ice in New England. She was afraid of the ice until she realized that there would always be ice and snow in New England. I remember driving in Buffalo and being afraid of the ice and snow. When, we moved to the Poconos it was more ice instead of snow. I had to overcome my fears because, I taught an 1 hr away in New York State and I needed the job. She equates ice with mistakes and states that you can’t resist mistakes. I totally agree if you are afraid to make a mistake or resist making mistakes, you might have missed a golden opportunity to be successful.
Chapter 8 - Giving Way to Passion…
In chapter 8, Roz believes that giving way to passion will enable you to participate in life at a higher level. I agree that “passion” can be the leading force or desire to be successful. I find that when the students are “passionate” about something it can be a driving force in the classroom. I’m thinking of having a contest to see who can create the best “spore” creatures/avatar and displaying the student work on a word wall. For instance, if a vocabulary word was reflection… I would have someone draw 2 characters that are refections of each other. Inequality…I would have 2 different characters. etc.
