Melanie Lauro of Manalapan has grown up hearing her mom extol the virtues of good oral hygiene … so much so that she sometimes got tired of the spiel.

It didn’t help matters much that her mother, Stacie, is a dental hygienist, the 16-year-old jokes. But today Melanie, who wore braces, says she’s thankful for the motherly tooth wisdom on flossing, brushing two to three times a day, and making regular appointments with the orthodontist.

“When you’re little, you don’t really feel like brushing your teeth all the time, but it’s good that I did, because now my teeth are nice,” said the Manalapan High School sophomore, who’s proud of her great smile.

She’s hoping to share that smile with those in need through her charitable endeavor, a toothbrush drive she dubbed A Brush with Greatness.

Melanie began collecting toothbrushes last year after learning that children at General Israel Orphans Home for Girls in Jerusalem could use them.

Why toothbrushes? Big things come in surprisingly small packages, Stacie Lauro said.

“A toothbrush is a little thing, but it’s powerful, it helps your mouth, it helps your whole body,” Stacie Lauro said, pointing to studies that indicate oral health and the health of other organs are linked. “There’s a whole mouth-body relationship.”

“Because my mom is a dental hygienist, I knew I was really fortunate to get proper dental care,” said Melanie, who collected about 200 brushes this year. “I realized there were people who don’t have the same opportunity and I thought it would be a good thing to do.”

And yes, they’re brand new, Stacie added with a laugh.

The mom-and-daughter duo, led by Melanie, contacted area dentists through a mail campaign to get donations. They collected about 400 toothbrushes last year and are hoping to step up their efforts to collect more in the years to come.

The Lauros have made a family affair out of helping those without families. Melanie’s sisters, 12-year-old twins Courtney and Chelsea, said they’re hoping the project is kept alive.

“It’s a great thing she is doing,” Courtney said of Melanie. “I want to take over when I’m in high school. It’s a nice thing to do and it will make me feel good knowing I helped somebody.”

“Hopefully, when they graduate (from high school) we can pass the torch to someone else,” Stacie Lauro said.

Orphanage director Miriam Sloman said the dental donations are appreciated.

“(The Lauros’) gift will emphasize the need for (the orphans) to take good care of their teeth each day and make them very happy to know that there are people who, although far away, are thinking of them,” Sloman said in an e-mail.

Dr. Leslie-Ann Furie, who has a periodontal practice in Manalapan with her husband, Gary Penner, is among area dentists who have donated to the cause. Furie said learning about Melanie’s work was a breath of fresh air, and she hopes to do even more to keep smiles on the faces of orphanage children.

“I was so proud of them (the Lauros),” Furie said. “We’re all in this together in life. I wrote an e-mail to the orphanage directly and asked, “What else do you need? Shampoo, clothing, notebooks, what could make life easier?’‚”

“Toothbrushes to me is just the start, just the tip of the iceberg,” Furie said. “I wanted to shock the girl who made this effort and show her, “Look what response you can get.’‚”

Did We Just Witness a Twitter Marriage Proposal? via kwout

A few days ago, lthumann inspired me to get back to twittering (Thanks, Lisa!) and I’m so glad I did :) How else would I have heard about what could be the next trend in marriage proposals? Where will twitter bring us next?

This quickly got me strolling down memory lane, thinking about my man & the day he proposed in August ‘99 (Narragansett Bay Cliffs, Newport, RI)- Great Memories!

If you too are already experiencing marital bliss, then you probably agree that every day is more blissful than the last….(yes, my husband is in the room while I’m writing this :) ) So, please leave a comment below about how the big question got popped for you- were you the popper or the popee? Make us cry, make us laugh, make us say “awhhhh, that’s so cute!”

In a few weeks, I will put all of your comments in a poll and we will vote on the “most memorable” - I can’t wait!

Have You “Eyed” the Eye-Project?

It’s nice to know that sometimes good ole-fashioned surfin’ can still bring you to some really interesting places on the web…

Recently (ok, it was actually back in December, but I’m a little bit behind in my posting- give a girl a break :) ), I found the Eye-Project with immediately reminded me of Mosaic on steroids! What a truly collaborative effort! I’m really glad I stuck with the site after my initial impression left me saying, “What the ‘heck’ is this?” - (that’s the PG version)

Check it out & let me know what you think!

Summertime, and the Learning is Easy…

This post comes straight from Lance Rougeux on the National Blog:

For the past two summers we have hosted some amazing regional and national institutes with STARs from all over the country. Our goal this year is to continue that tradition but also to extend these opportunities to more and more STARs. So…Virtual drum roll please…

We are very excited to announce our third annual DEN Summer Institutes. The DEN National Institute will occur at Discovery’s global headquarters in Silver Spring, MD from July 21-25, 2008. The week before, July 14-18, 2008, we will host the DEN Leadership Council Institute (also in Silver Spring, MD). Up to 100 STARs will be invited to attend the DEN National Institute and 50 leadership council members will gather for the LC Institute. We encourage all STARs to apply!

But it doesn’t stop there. Your DEN Account Managers are working very hard to finalize the schedule for something the DEN’s never done before. In addition to the 60 Days of Discovery we have planned, throughout the summer and fall we will be hosting seven two-day regional conferences in all parts of the country.

No matter what your schedule or where you live, we are trying our best to make sure that you have an opportunity to connect with your colleagues in fun, enriching, and collaborative settings. With this year’s plan, we will quadruple the number of STARs who get to attend an in-person summer event compared to the last two years.

So, let’s start with the National and LC Institutes at Discovery’s headquarters in Silver Spring, MD.

Lodging and meals will be covered by the Discovery Educator Network (see FAQs for more details). All travel costs to and from the institute, in addition to a $100 registration fee, are the responsibility of the STAR Discovery Educator.

Save the Short Story

Recently, I took a look back at my notes from Dan Pink’s A Whole New Mind & instantly honed in on his thoughts about Storytelling: “The Conceptual Age can remind us what has always been true but rarely been acted upon- we must listen to each other’s stories and that we are each the authors of our own lives.” issue

With so much attention being given lately to the Digital Story (and rightfully so), I thought it fitting to pay homage to the Father, or Mother if you prefer :) of the Digital Story- The written Short Story.

One Story is a non-profit literary magazine that features one great short story mailed to subscribers every three weeks. Their mission is to save the short story by publishing in a friendly format that allows readers to experience each story as a stand-alone work of art and a simple form of entertainment. As an interesting twist, they only publish a writer ONE TIME. This prevents them from relying on a stable of writers and helps them find new and exciting voices. Between September and June, all writers can submit their work.

I just ordered an 18 issue subscription for my mother-in-law for her birthday (I hope she likes it!) - I’m looking forward to reading her back issues.
