Top News - Laptop-for-kids project to resume donations
-
If you missed the opportunity to buy a low-cost mobile computer from the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) initiative late last year, you’ll have another chance: OLPC plans to resume its Give One, Get One program, in which people spend $400 to buy one of the nonprofit’s rugged computers and donate a second one to a child in a developing country.
-
The second run of the donor program is expected to begin around the end of the summer and will be open to buyers in Europe and the United States.
-
OLPC recently announced a partnership with Microsoft Corp. that will enable international governments to choose a Linux or Windows operating system on the XO computers they buy. (See “Low-cost XO laptop now runs Windows.”) But buyers in the Give One, Get One program might not be able to opt for Windows unless the nonprofit and Microsoft work out a licensing arrangement.
-
the next-generation “XO-2″ reportedly will reduce power consumption even further, to 1 watt.
-
The XO-2 will be about half the size of the first-generation device and will approximate the size of a book.

Try Napster free for 7 Days—Play and download music without paying per song.
Napster Goes Copy-Free
Napster, which is now a LEGAL, paid music site, has recently reinvented themselves with a new 4.5 Version. It contains 6 million MP3 format copy-free songs. Thats right- High Quality (256 mb) mp3’s that are UNPROTECTED (That means you can easily get them onto your ipod) & Copyright FREE!
No monthly membership fee- just 99 cents per song- sound like a familiar price?
I think this helps explain why iTunes has started offering additional material for it’s users like iTunes U. Whatever the reason, this kind of competition just ads up to more variety & media resources for all of us- Hooray!

Mom indicted in MySpace suicide - Crime & courts- msnbc.com
-
LOS ANGELES - A federal grand jury on Thursday indicted a Missouri woman for her alleged role in perpetrating a hoax on the online social network MySpace against a 13-year-old neighbor who committed suicide.
-
U.S. Attorney Thomas P. O’Brien said this was the first time the federal statute on accessing protected computers has been used in a social-networking case. It has been used in the past to address hacking.

Citing terms of MySpace service
The indictment says MySpace members agree to abide by terms of service that include, among other things, not promoting information they know to be false or misleading; soliciting personal information from anyone under age 18 and not using information gathered from the Web site to “harass, abuse or harm other people.” -
After the girl killed herself, Drew and the others deleted the information for the account, the indictment said.
-
Last month, an employee of Drew, 19-year-old Ashley Grills, told ABC’s “Good Morning America” she created the false MySpace profile but Drew wrote some of the messages to Megan.
