Want to Join the NJ-LC? Now’s Your Chance!!

den globe small

Many of our AMAZING NJ DEN members have said that they’d love to be part of the NJ DEN Leadership Council.  Well,  Now’s your chance!

In order to provide the necessary support to ever-growing state-level DEN communities, give new STAR Discovery Educators the opportunity to take an active leadership role with the DEN then DEN is starting an annual LC election process.

From now until Friday, May 15, 2009 you have the opportunity to express interest in joining the NJ LC.

Every STAR Discovery Educator is encouraged to formally express his/her interest by completing the self-nomination form.  You will select which leadership role(s) you are interested in as well as provide a brief statement of interest that will serve as your “campaign speech” should someone else wish to be considered for the same leadership role.

In order to be considered for the Chair, Blog Coordinator or Events Coordinator roles you must serve on the DEN LC for at least one year as part of the Events Team or Blog Team.  For new LCs this does not apply.

For more details about the DEN Leadership Councils including the roles, responsibilities, benefits and the election process please read the DEN LC Overview.

If you have any questions, please post them as comments to the National Blog version of this post so everyone can see the response :)

Another AMAZING DEN Opportunity!!!!!

YOU HAVE TO CHECK THIS OUT!!!

from the DEN National Blog:

“Australia, South Africa, and China + 9 DEN STARs + 36 DEN STAR Students + Your Dream Come True = A Discovery Student Adventure!

It’s the ultimate equation for DEN STARs and definitely our dream come true for you!  We are thrilled to announce the launch of the Discovery Student Adventure Program.

What’s a Discovery Student Adventure you ask?!?  Well, imagine being able to sign up and take your students to one of 8 amazing trips to the Arctic, Australia, China, Costa Rica, Ecuador/Galapagos Islands, Italy/Greece, New Zealand/Fiji, and South Africa.  These trips are free to the educators and are of cost to their students.  These inaugural trips will launch during the summer of 2010.

But that’s 2010… what about 2009?!?!  Can I get a virtual drum roll please….

Let me introduce to you the opportunity of a lifetime….. The Discovery Student Adventure Pilot Program. In order to gather marketing materials and test run the incredible itineraries….. Discovery will be sending 9 DEN STARs to one of 3 locations (Australia, China, and South Africa)  But that’s not all… it gets better… each of these DEN STARs will be able to bring 4 of their students at NO COST!  That’s right DEN STARs… these trips are free for you and your students! (Note: We are looking for 5th-12th grade teachers and students ages 10-17)

I have seen the itineraries…. and all I can say is be prepared to be blown away.

What do you need to do to participate?!? Stay tuned as we will be posting a link to the application on the DEN National Blog in the coming weeks.

Here’s some of the official wording…

In 2010, Discovery Education will launch Discovery Student Adventures, education-based international trips for students to eight destinations including:  Arctic, Australia, China, Cost Rica, Ecuador/Galapagos Islands, Italy/Greece, New Zealand/Fiji Islands, and South Africa.

To effectively integrate educator feedback into these inaugural trips, a select group of educators will have the opportunity to travel with Discovery in the summer of 2009 as part of a one-time special opportunity to pilot a Discovery Student Adventure trip.

Educators will serve as chaperones to a group of students, and will also be an integral part of selecting the students for these pilot trips. Travel program will be at no cost to the selected educators and students.  We are looking for students ages 10 through 17 and educators that teach 5th through 12th grade.

The three pilot trip destinations are Australia, China and South Africa.  Trips will provide for a variety of enriching and experiential activities from cultural exchanges, to community service, to science and exploration, to physically engaging adventure activities.

So what do you think?!?  Do you want to join us for a Discovery Student Adventure?!?”

Boom-de-ya-da

Here’s a little video that the NJ, NY, PA & ME LC’s put together on the 1st day of the 2008 Summer LC Institute.

Class- Please Make Sure Your Cell Phones are Turned ON!

Right now we are sitting in Hall Davidson’s opening keynote for the 2008 DEN Leadership Council Institute- It’s in your Pocket: How to Use Cell Phones in Your Classroom.176604426_d6e536ba48.jpg?v=0” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

Qustion: What do YOU do in your classroom with cell phones?

Answer (for most of us): Mostly take them away!

Here are a few of his main points:

  • Although the debate about cell phone use in schools is a good one, if we continue to try to ban them we are just fighting a losing battle. Why? Of all the stakeholders in our students’ education, who will be most vehement about ensuring those students have cell phones in their pockets? PARENTS!
  • Who forbids cell phone use? The Taliban, and a High School near you (Even Fidel Castro came around!)
  • 60% of U.S. homes don’t even have a land-line in their house anymore. One student said: “”Why should I have a phone where I’m not?”
  • Education follows Business- Nokia (largest cell phone maker in the world) is currently rolling out IP video technology. There business plan is all about allowing buisness to know what’s going on in there buildings. They expect to see almost a 400% ROI in less than 15 months.
  • Education Technology can follow business model by using video to control the outflow of information from their schools in a positive manner & allow everyone to know the GOOD things going on in our schools.
  • Cell Phone Video can track students location

Some Mobile Media Solutions for Education:

  • Qik.com allows live video feed from your cell phone (doesn’t work on all cell phone types yet- but it will soon…)
  • Gcast.com can podcast phone conversations automatically to the web. What a great tool for primary source interviews!
  • Jott.com can post text messages automatically to your Twitter account
  • Polleverywhere.com will instantly take polls & post the results for you. The results even do live updating as you view them- very cool!
  • You can update your mobile setting in YouTube to post video automatically from your cell phone.

Hall’s closing message about our students & cell phones: OUR “non-work” time has been “ruined” by mobile devices, why shouldn’t there’s be too?!

Right on Hall- Let’s get students to start to use mobile media tools in school for good, not just for “evil” :)

The DEN is Just Awesome!

This is copied from Matt Monjan’s Blog

Recently my colleague Kim Randall - DEN Western Region- sent me a link that got me thinking about our LCs- in a song like way…

I Love ALL our teachers from coast-to-coast
But of the Mid-Atlantic, I have to boast
We’ve got Virginia and it’s LC team
And Pennsylvania - what a dream
Boom de ah da boom de ah da boom de ah dah

We’ve got New Jersey - what a boon
And Maryland whose LC is coming soon!

Ohio will soon be on its way
which is why I say…
Boom de ah boom de ah da

The Mid Atlantic Team is Just Awesome!

Then I thought…what if you could send me a sound file (matt_monjan@discovery.com) of why you love the DEN and a photo to compliment it? I’ll collate your responses and unveil at the next Day of Discovery - more information coming soon - keep your eye on the blogs!

Of course you can share your comments here too!

Texas DEN Leadership Council Needs YOU!

Elaine Plybon, blog coordinator for the Texas DEN Leadership Council, needs YOU!  The Irving Independent School District in Irving, Texas, for which she works, hosts an annual Technology Media Fair.  This year, the district has opened up several categories for online judging.  The hope, above all, is that involving you as judges will keep the students excited about technology and sharing their work with a global audience.  This is where you come in.  The contest needs judges.  Anyone who has an interest in technology in education is qualified to be a judge.  All the projects can be judged beginning now through January 7, 2008.

There are six categories and levels from K-12.  Anyone who chooses to judge may evaluate as many or few entries as they wish.  Would YOU consider helping with this cause?  You can volunteer to be a judge and you can also share the word with other education professionals through your own blogs, twitters, feeds, and other social networking venues.

To judge the projects, click here, then click on the judging link.  Please include your name and email address.  Your email address will not be published.  Your information will be used for security only.  If you choose to help, please expect an email from administrative staff confirming that the address listed next to you name is a valid email address.

Let’s see if we can help spread the word and help students in their global outreach!

PLCs: Professional Development with a little TLC!

Have you hit your “hundred hours” yet?

Us Garden Staters are familiar with the NJ State DOE’s structure for professional development (PD), commonly known as “100 Hours”. Basically, all instructional staff in NJ must fullfill 100 hours of professional development in 5 years, or about 20 hours/year.

NJ is in the midst of a paradigm shift in regards to PD. Starting in January, educators will start to fullfill our PD requirements by participating in Professional Learning Communities, or PLCs. My initial thought: “IT’S ABOUT GOSH-DARN TIME!!!” My second thought: “Everyone in my district should become a DEN member!”

It’s a huge relief to see the state finally recognizing, in a formal way, the BENEFITS of COLLABORATIVE LEARNING- Something the DEN illustrates EVERY DAY!

Our district held an in-service a few days ago to introduce the concept of PLCs to our staff. First, we played a trivia game to highlight the need for ALL of us to look to others for help & inspiration (We “pitted” our teachers against our administrators! IT was a blast!) Here’s the ppt I shared after the game as an intro to PLCs.

Please share ideas on what your district is doing to facilitate collaborative professional development.
