Yes, I know it’s Tuesday, but I was really excited to get this out!
I have been a DEN STAR since 2011. However, I haven’t really embodied the whole STAR idea. Yes, I use Discovery everyday with all of my students for a multitude of activities and assignments, but one side of Discovery that I haven’t really ventured into is the blog. I have a technology blog of my own that I update on a regular basis…usually. But I really wanted to start using my DEN blog as well. So from now on I will be posting every Wednesday a different way that I am using Discovery and all that that entails in my classroom.
This week my kindergarten cuties are learning about community helpers. What better way to learn about community helpers up close than to use Discovery videos?! But I wanted to take it one step further. I have really been pushing myself lately to give more control over to the kids….even the little ones. So instead of just showing Discovery videos up on the Smart board, I created a writing assignment using the Assignment Builder. I imported 4 or 5 videos for the students to watch and then they had to type 2 or 3 sentences about what they learned from the video. It was a very simple process but the kids loved it! They were so excited to get to watch the videos on their own screen, pause them when they wanted to, and, of course, wear cool headphones! But that’s just one thing I love about Discovery! It helps make the most simple activity an engaging lesson where they forget they are even learning!
Check back next Wednesday for the next installment of “What’s Happening!”
