2nd Prize: Tracey McGrath ($50 Discovery Channel Store gift card)
3rd Prize: Paula Giran (Discovery Education polo/golf shirt)
4th Prize: Stevie Kline (Discovery Education computer bag)

DEN Training Rewards

Have you been thinking about conducting your first training session as a Discovery Educator, but need that extra incentive to get moving?  Have you been conducting training sessions all year and want some free stuff for all your hard work?  Well, you are in luck!

Beginning today until December 31, 2005, you can receive rewards for conducting Discovery Educator Network training sessions or letting me know about training sessions that have already been completed.

If you have conducted TWO (2) training events between August 15, 2005 and December 31, 2005 you are eligible to choose one of the following items:
- Discovery Education Polo shirt
- Discovery Education Computer Bag

Discovery Educators who have conducted FOUR (4) training events between August 15, 2005 and December 31, 2005 are eligible to receive one of the following (in addition to the shirt or bag they already received):
- Wireless Presentation mouse
- $40 Gift Card to the Discovery Channel Store

There are many types of training sessions that count.  Over lunch, show 4 or 5 colleagues how to put a video into PowerPoint.  Conduct an awareness session where you demonstrate unitedstreaming to your whole faculty.  Set up an after-school training where you work hands-on with your peers.  As long as you are showing others the power of unitedstreaming, it counts.

In order for your past and future trainings to count, I must receive a training summary.  All training summaries must be received by December 31, 2005.

Here is the training summary…

And, don’t forget that you can order a free training kit for your session(s).

DEN National Poster Contest Begins!

Walk into any classroom and what do you see?  Desks.  Books.  Flag.  Globe.  A poster of a monkey dangling from a tree encouraging you to “Hang in There!” Well, it might not always be the monkey poster, but every classroom does have a poster (or two or three) on the walls.

It is with this reality in mind that the Discovery Educator Network (DEN) is pleased to present its first national contest for Discovery Educators and their students.

The DEN National Poster Contest challenges students to tap into their creative and technical talents to develop a classroom poster using images from the unitedstreaming™ Image Library.

Winners in each of three grade categories (grades 5 and under, grades 6-8 and grades 9-12) will receive a $50 gift card to the Discovery Channel Store and have their design produced into a full-size classroom poster.  The winners will have their work hanging in classrooms all across the country!

The contest officially begins today, November 11, 2005.  All entries must be received no later than Saturday, December 17, 2005 (5 P.M. Local Time Zone).  Winners will be announced via the DEN blog on Friday, January 6, 2006 (Noon EST).

All details re: size, formatting, images, etc. are outlined in the Official Rules below.  Please contact me if you have any questions.  It would be really helpful if you post your questions as a comment to this blog.  This way, I can respond via the blog and everyone can see the answers.

Final Thoughts from T+L2

Not to be missed at this convention was the number of DEN educators, field managers, and keynote speakers who presented.  A winning combination hailing from DEN MI, field manager Kristin Furdak and Sue Summerford, scholarship winner, really packed them in for Using Web Logs (Blogs) In and Out of the Classroom.  Their PowerPoint presentation is one of the most comprehensive I’ve seen and lays out in user-friendly fashion an easy transition into blogging.  I came to this session wanting to learn how to set up a district-approvable blog for my students and I left good to go, with two new friends and superb resources.

Then there’s Jannita Demian, California Manager, and Lance’s good friend and rival.  She really wants to beat Lance [it’s personal, Lance, she said to say] in the East-West competition.  Jannita is as colorful as her blogging.  You have to check it out.  Her session, 50 Ways to Use unitedstreaming, brought on the now familiar Fire Marshall sign, and still they packed in—at 7:30 in the morning.  She was better than a Java jolt from Starbucks, and a lot funnier too.  Using pre-portal examples from DEN educators, Jannita gave examples of cutting edge uses of unitedstreaming integration at all grade and subject levels, proving that those harder to integrate [math and science, lower primary and primary] can be done expertly.  I’m guessing that she exceeded 50 ways, but it’s hard to count and impossible to take notes when she presents—she’s far too engaging and entertaining, a hallmark of all the DEN presenters I saw.

Contest, anyone?  Jannita challenged DEN educators to recruit 20 new members.  The first three [from any state] to recruit 20 will get a full-day program with Hall Davidson [copyright guru but does a wicked Digital Storytelling workshop] and her.  Trust me, you do want to win this one, and you get to pick the program.  I have two recruits in and two more coming, so if anyone in PA is close to 20, I’ll throw mine in so you can get the program.  All’s fair in East-West competition.  Just let me know.

One parting thought about the convention.  Discovery flew top execs to the conference Thursday to have us “report out” about unitedstreaming—what’s hot and what’s not.  We were honest, but I doubt we covered it all.  So tell us what you think so Lance can forward the information:

What can be improved in unitedstreaming?
What do you like and want kept?
What would you like to see changed?
Other?

They really listen in this part of corporate America, and you just have to love them for it.
