It is 3 a.m., wednesday morning in upstate New York. For those that don't know that is the part of NY that is not nyc. Unfortunately it is much too cloudy to see the shower tonight. I am very disappointed since it was to cloudy last year too. I will try again tomorrow night to see if any stragglers will peak through the clouds then (it's supposed to be cloudy also).

I thought it was great that you put it out there for your PLN to vote on. I saw your tweet and voted let us know which one was the winner. Don't you just love the ease of Google docs to make polls.

It gave me an idea of the first day of school. Come up with three or four activities and let kids decide which one to do. I have already made several polls on Google and plan to use it a lot this year. Check out this idea to make digital clickers http://1to1-on-a-shoestring.wikispaces.com/Google+Forms+&+Digital+Clickers.

Hi Mark,
I'm glad I had read Outlier before attending his keynote at NECC09. I thought his chapter about birthdays and success has a lot of bearing on the educational community. We are in such a rush to get our kids in school, but is that the right thing to do? I know because of my birthday, I was 5 and 1/2 before I could start Kindergarten. Glad I didn't start at 4 and 1/2 because I was that much more mature when I started.

When he chronicled the Beatles "rise to fame" it was interesting to think about all of the performing they had done in Germany before their fame. I really enjoyed reading about the opportunity Bill Gates had as a teenager. Spending 10,000 hours at something sure does give you a level of expertise.

Like you, I plan to pick up his other books this summer.
Happy reading!

Say what? What is it about Outliers that provides you an additional teaching tool? Do you intend to tell the students that no matter how hard they work, they'll amount to nothing unless a unique opportunity presents itself to them?

I've read both Tipping Point and Blink and enjoyed them both. Very easy reads, but very thought provoking. I'll see if our library has a copy of Outliers yet.

Mark,
Thanks for the link to the free tools. I wanted to share another free tool with you. It is www.learningzen.com and it is a free online learning management system that allows anyone to post courses and validate learning. We have been live for just over three months and the response has been surprizing. The variety and quantity of published courses is encouraging. We hope this will be a great supplement to classroom teaching. Thanks again for your blog.
