How To: Create a Landmark

Want an easy way to return to DEN in SL Headquarters?  Anything beats flying around the EduIsland II sim looking for DEN in SL (now was it near the castle?  maybe next to the self-guided tour car?).  Remember, DEN in SL is on EduIsland II at 69, 99, 21.  Get yourself there and you’ll never need to wander around SL again!

Simple step-by-step guide to creating a Landmark in SL.  Remember, you can use these directions to create any number of landmarks so you can easily return to your favorite places.  Just be sure to change the labels in the directions!

Get yourself to DEN in SL Headquarters (I promise this will be the last time you have to wander around!), then:

1.  Click on ^World^ in the top menu bar.

2.  Select ^Create Landmark Here^.

3.  The landmark will automatically appear in your ^Inventory^ in the ^Landmarks^ folder.

If you wish to rename your landmark:

1.  Right-click on the landmark and select ^Rename^.

2.  The landmark is high-lighted and you can type in a new title (you might want to type in ‘DEN in SL’).

Note:  A window also opens up with the landmark on your screen, for now just close ^X^ out of it.

How To: Join DEN in SL

So you’ve heard about Second Life.  You’ve read the posts on this blog (and perhaps other blogs related to Second Life).  You’ve signed up for an account.  You may even have gotten your avatar off of Orientation Island (congrats BTW!!!).  Now what?

You DEFINITELY want to join the DEN group in SL.  That way you’ll be sure to receive any group notices that get sent out.  And you get one of those cool little ‘head tags’ that identify you as a DEN in SL member!

It’s really quite easy.  And I’m just the one to take you step-by-step through the process!

1.  Click on ^Search^ on the bottom menu bar.

2.  Click on the ^Groups^ tab.

3.  In the search box type ‘Discovery Educator Network’.

4.  When you locate Discovery Educator Network in the list that appears, click on it.

5.  You’ll notice that on the right side of the ^Search^ window you will notice information about Discovery Educator Network.

6.  Click on ^Join^.

By joining DEN in SL you’ll get in-world announcements just for DEN members.

That was it!!!  Now how easy was that?!

Save the Date!

The event will be at the DEN in SL Headquarters (EduIsland II 69, 99, 21) on August 15th from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. SLT (that would be 8:30 - 10:00 p.m. EST).

Why would you want to attend?  Because you’ll have a chance to learn what DEN in SL can do for you, ***PRIZES***, you’ll be able to network with other DEN members, ***PRIZES***, there will games, ***PRIZES***, there will be dancing (dance floor, disco lights, and music!), ***PRIZES***, you’ll see demos, ***PRIZES***, oh, and did I mention ***PRIZES***(must be present to win)!!!!

If you want to get your bearings prior to the NOT-TO-BE-MISSED event feel free to contact any one of the Leadership Council members.  I’m sure between all of us, we’ll be able to meet you in-world to help you get your SLegs (Second Life Legs).

Come to DEN Headquarters

Finally got into Second Life this a.m., between that and my Twitter response from JessieMarie I’ve got the landmark for you to get to the DEN headquarters.

Here’s some step-by-step instructions:

1.  Log in to SL.

2.  Click on ^Map^ on the lower right of your screen.

3.  In the box in front of ^Search^, type ‘EduIsland II’.

4.  Click on ^Search^

5.  You’ll see ‘EduIsland II’ appear in the search box underneath and it should be highlighted.

6.  Go down to ^Location^.

7.  Type in ‘69′ in the first box, ‘99′ in the second box, and ‘21 in the third box.

8.  Click on ‘Teleport’.

That’s it!  You will arrive near the Information Desk in the DEN Headquarters.  Here’s a piece of advice (heed this ESPECIALLY during our August 15th Premiere Gala Event).  MOVE!!!  That’s right, remember if everyone types in those coordinates at the same time we could have a massive pile-up (of avatars)!  Of course, I’ll be standing by with a camera to record these events! LOL

We’re ‘LIVE’!!!

OMG – I’m wanting to do my first post since the DEN in SL blog has gone ‘live’ and what do I get when I log into TypePad????

TypePad is currently unavailable. We apologize for the inconvenience, and we’re working hard to bring the service back online as soon as possible.

I’m feeling the panic start to rise in my throat since I plan on spending the day in NYC seeing a play (Jersey Boys), having cocktails at the top of the Marriot overlooking the city, eating a Northern Italian meal, and maybe taking in a salsa club or two.

I’d like to begin (or rather ‘continue’) this post with a ‘teaser’.  Mark your calendars…Wednesday, August 15th, 5:30 p.m. SLT (that’s ‘Second Life Time’ – which is the same as PST; or if you’re from the East Coast, that would be 8:30 p.m.)…we’ll be having our DEN in SL Premiere Gala Event!  Stay tuned to this blog for more details, but DEFINITELY clear off your schedule for this gathering!

I’m someone who needs to have a ‘manual’ of sorts, or a hard copy of instructions; I’m definitely a visual rather than auditory learner.  As such, I’d like to share some resources I’ve come across as I’ve learned (though believe me, I still have MUCH to learn) how to navigate SL.

First off, I was NOT impressed with my first book on SL, Rymaszewski’s book, ‘Second Life:  The Official Guide’.  It was too advanced, it was too out-dated, it was just too…not right for a beginner.

On the other hand, I simply LOVED v3image’s (yes, that’s who the book is by!) book, ‘A Beginner’s Unofficial Guide to Second Life’.  My copy is all marked up and tabbed, and well, you get the picture.  This is a MUST HAVE if you want to learn how to do basic things in SL and to have an easy to refer to book on hand when you forget little things like what those green dots on the mini-maps mean.  You can purchase the book from www.v3image.com or from Amazon.com

OMG!!!!  It goes from bad to worse!!!!  I start up Second Life only to be confronted with the following message:

"July 24, 2007 3:45 p.m.  Due to a power outage at one of our data centers, the grid is heavily impaired at this time.  Logins are currently disabled."

How am I supposed to get the Landmark for our DEN Headquarters!!!

Help me save the day…..in a previous post you’ve met your DEN in SL Leadership Council members.  We’d LOVE to know who’s in SL.  If you would, in the ‘Comments’ section, could you share your SL avatar’s name, your RL (Real Life) name, and which state you’re from.
