A Worthwhile RL Cause

I know that the main focus of this blog is Second Life, HOWEVER, there are times when RL events need to be shared EVERYWHERE, and this is one of those times.

On Sept. 11, please join the DEN team and the Military Channel as we partner with America Supports You, a Department of Defense program recognizing citizens’ support for our military and communicating that support to members of our Armed Forces and their families.

You can read more at the main DEN blog.

Sponsors of the Premiere Gala Event

In addition to thanking the wonderful DEN in SL Leadership Council for all the time (and that would include ‘good times’! LOL) and effort the put into ensuring that the Premiere Gala Event was a smashing hit, not only in SL, but in RL, I would like to take this opportunity to thank some sponsors who enabled us to have the ribbon-cutting ceremony and some sponsors who donated gift cards as prizes.

Hyperstring.net donated the ribbon cutting object for the official opening of the building.

And thanks to all of you who attended and made the Gala everything we hoped it would be!

How To: Create a Landmark

Want an easy way to return to DEN in SL Headquarters?  Anything beats flying around the EduIsland II sim looking for DEN in SL (now was it near the castle?  maybe next to the self-guided tour car?).  Remember, DEN in SL is on EduIsland II at 69, 99, 21.  Get yourself there and you’ll never need to wander around SL again!

Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to creating a Landmark in SL.  Remember, you can use these directions to create any number of landmarks so you can easily return to your favorite places.  Just be sure to change the labels in the directions!

Get yourself to DEN in SL Headquarters (I promise this will be the last time you have to wander around!), then:

1.  Click on ^World^ in the top menu bar.

2.  Select ^Create Landmark Here^.

3.  The landmark will automatically appear in your ^Inventory^ in the ^Landmarks^ folder.

If you wish to rename your landmark:

1.  Right-click on the landmark and select ^Rename^.

2.  The landmark is high-lighted and you can type in a new title (you might want to type in ‘DEN in SL’).

Note:  A window also opens up with the landmark on your screen, for now just click ^X^ to close out of it.

DEN in SL…The Movie

I’m telling ya guys…our DEN in SL Leadership Council is ABSOLUTELY THE BEST!!!  If you don’t believe me, check out the link for yourself!

Up for an Academy Award:

DEN in SL…The Movie

Created by our very own DEN in SL LC Chair, Riptide Furse.  He’s amazing.  First, he MCs the Trivia Game held at DEN in SL the other day and where I commented in a post that he could leave education and enter the television entertainment field, and now this!!!

He created it with a ***FREE*** and he claims SUPER SIMPLE program called Animoto check it out and give it a try.  If you create a SL slideshow, PLEASE provide us with the link in the ‘Comments’ section.  Who knows?  You might be up for ‘Best Director’ at the next Academy Awards!

TNC’S Walking Tour of EduIsland II Stops by DEN in SL

Posted with permission from Riptide Furse:

Once again the people on the DEN in SL Leadership Council and members of the DEN in SL amazed me.

Last night one of our neighbors, The Teacher Networking Center, held a tour of all of the great facilities on Eduisland II. Showing up at the DEN house to give an overview when the tour arrived were Lor, Celestia and Laelia. I was there also but was locking up. Lor took the lead and along with Cel and Laelia gave the people on the tour more than enough info. I was able to take a load of pictures. While doing this I saw many of the tour participants change their titles to DEN members to show off that they were already members or even STAR educators. More people took tshirts, laptops and jackets.

I believe Laelia put the number of people on the tour at 35.

I have put the pictures of the tour while at the DEN building here

Some of the pictures have already been shown on the Second Life web site.

Another great job!

How To: Create a Notecard

So you’ve been exploring a bit on your own.  You’ve noticed these boxes (or in some cases, other objects) that say something along the lines of:  ‘Drop Your Notecard Here’.  You’d love to, but you have NO CLUE as to how to do so.

I’m here to guide you step-by-step.  It’s really quite easy.  In fact, why don’t you log into Second Life, head over to the DEN in SL Headquarters on EduIsland II (69, 99, 21) and try it out.  The dropbox is located on the Information Desk on the Main Floor.

Directions to Create a Notecard:

1.  Click on ^Inventory^ on the bottom menu.

2.  Click on the ^Create^ tab.

3.  Select ^New Notecard^.

4.  In the window that appears, type a message.

5.  When you’re done, click on the ^Save^ button.

6.  Look in your Inventory in the ^Notecards^ folder.  You now have a notecard titled ^New Notecard^.

7.  Right-click on ^New Notecard^ and select ^Rename^.

8.  The words ^New Notecard^ are high-lighted and you can type in a new title.  Make sure that it’s something that you can easily recognize.

9.  With your Inventory window still open, left-click and drag the ^[whatever you named it]^ notecard into the dropbox on the information desk.

That’s it!  You’ve just created your first notecard and successfully given it out.

Premiere Gala Event as Viewed Through the Eyes of Lor Fredriksson

Wow!! After three months of anticipation and planning, the DEN in SL Gala is now a memory. What a great event it turned out to be! I was delighted to see so many DEN members and Eduisland II neighbors in attendance. The atmosphere was electric! Everyone appeared to be
enjoying themselves, dancing, chatting, learning new skills, making new friends, winning prizes. The DEN was festive, the sim was filled to its limit. We are excited to be planning future events and hope to see everyone visiting our DEN HQ. Let us know what other events
you might enjoy, share your knowledge, get involved  - "we are our greatest resource"!

Premiere Gala Event as Viewed Through the Eyes of Celestia Cazelet

Heading into the big gala event at the DEN, I was unsure what to expect.  Sure, we had planned and hypothesized and tried to consider anything that might come up, but you never really know until something happens how it’s all going to work out.  I didn’t need to worry!  I showed up a couple of hours early (I thought) to get some decorating done and found the house to already have about 15 people eagerly awaiting the festivities.  The momentum built thoughout the evening until we ultimately maxed out the sim! Everyone was happy, energetic, and very excited to share and get to know each other.  Some were new, others not-so-new, but we all had a common bond!  Anytime we can get a group of educators together is well worth the planning! I’m looking forward to watching the DEN in SL grow!

Premiere Gala Event as Viewed Through the Eyes of JessieMarie Flanagan

As we planned and built then demolished and rebuilt things over and over again…I began to wonder if it would all be worth it? Woud anyone ever come see this wonderful, unique place that we had all built? WOW! Was I ever underestimating the power of the DEN! I was simply amazed at how many people showed up at the Gala! It was wall-to-wall avatars, some were obviously brand new and some were seasoned vets, but everyone came with the same purpose: 1) to have fun, 2) to support the DEN, 3) to see what was so special about SL, and 4) to learn. It is simply awesome to be able to visually eavesdrop on some of the most cutting edge educators in the country brainstorming! Tons of fun was had by all that night, especially the LC! We were Skyping while trying to also "chat" with everyone, talk about multi-tasking! It was truely an experience! For those of you who made it ,"Thanks so much for your support!!!" For those of you who wanted to come but RL had to take priority, "we understand, come visit soon!" For those of you who have never been in-world…"What on Planet Earth are you waiting for?!?!?" LOL
We were all newbies once and can completely sympathize with you. The only dumb questions are the ones you don’t ask, so please ask away, we are here to help. Hope to see everyone "in world" very soon! HUGS!!! ~JessieMarie Flanagan (AKA: Anne Truger)
