I always feel that a picture is worth a thousand words….well, this clip is worth….well, you do the math!
I was busy taking pictures and helping those who were new to SL figure out how NOT to wear the costume box, but rather rez the items to their inventory and wear the items. The next post will acknowledge those who won the costume contests and those who contributed items to make the DEN in SL event another FABULOUS hit!
If you attended, please feel free to comment below.
If you are please check out the Tennesse post here.
If you missed Beth’s workshop on ‘Differentiating Instruction Using Discovery Streaming’ yesterday, October 20th, you can take a look at the chat transcript over at our Google Groups page. And while you’re there, if you haven’t signed up for DEN in SL Google Groups, you just might want to do so!

If you head over to Google Groups click on the right menu on ‘Pages’ and look for ‘Text of Differentiating with DE’ for the chat transcript.
Here’s another event to mark on your calendars: November 7th 6 p.m. SLT (9 p.m. EST)!
DEN in SL will be hosting a Basic Pottery Making Workshop. How cool is that?!? The workshop itself will be held in the sandbox on EduIsland II (right outside the DEN in SL HQs).
You will learn to create a vase of any size, and apply a texture to it. You will learn how to adjust the texture and object settings. You wil learn shortcuts to building. This is not an all encompasing building class, but is meant to give a basic overview to building with boxes and spheres and to working with textures.
Thonalon Umarov will be conducting the workshop. Please be sure to IM Lor in-world to pre-register.
On November 10th, our very own LC member, Celestia Cazalet will be conducting a Digital StoryTelling workshop at DEN in SL HQs. For those of you who were fortunate enough to make it to her workshop during EduIsland II’s Education Fair you’ll be taken to the next level. For those of you who missed her workshop (me included!) here’s our opportunity to join in!
In this follow-up session to the Digital Storytelling workshop during EduIsland II’s recent EduFair, Celestia Cazalet will introduce participants to techniques for capturing images and video in Second Life, culminating in a project to create machinimas entirely in SL.
Participants will submit their videos for a contest to win recognition and prizes!
Please make sure to IM Celestia Cazalet in-world to let her know if you will be attending. I know I’ll be there — this is a NOT TO BE MISSED event!
Now try saying that three times fast!!!
If you’re shopping around for the perfect costume for the October 28th event (I’ve already got mine!) you should know that we will be having contests in the following four categories:
1. Sci Fi/Fantasy
2. Occupation
3. Funniest
4. Scariest
I was hoping they would do a shoe contest, but that was quickly nixed by the LC! Wonder why?!? I also wanted one for ‘Avatar with the Most Purple Hair Styles’, but for some strange (LOL) reason that was also nixed. Probably because at over 70 (but who’s counting) I would probably win! Oh, and LC members are NOT ELIGIBLE to enter the above listed contests. (Though that doesn’t mean we won’t come dressed in one of those categories!)
Please clear your calendars as this is one event you won’t want to miss (but then, NO event at DEN in SL is an event to be missed!). There’ll be contests, and prizes, and dancing, and eating (yup, we’ve got food), and if nothing else, you’ve JUST got to come to see how we decorate the DEN in SL!!!
Just left Second Life where a number of avatars had the opportunity to chat with Claudia Linden (and drink some bubbly!) after her hour-long webinar hosted by none other than Steve Dembo. Over 60 people attended the webinar (and please add your comments below). I would have to say that about 90% of those attending are already in SL (or about to step in-world). Claudia did what I would consider a basic SL presentation (and in all fairness to Claudia, without knowing the make-up of the audience and their exposure to SL I would have done the same) and addressed some of the questions posed by the attendees. I believe that the slides and the transcript will be available at the DE website (thanks to Steve for doing the posting) within the next day or so. One thing Claudia did point out and which I would suggest you take advantage of, is the New Media Consortium (NMC) sim that has an Orientation Area of their own which is specifically geared towards educators.

That’s right folks! Here’s your reminder about the workshop at DEN in SL HQs on October 20th:
“Please join us Saturday October 20th at 4 pm SLT at the DEN for a discussion on Differentiating Instruction and Discovery Education Streaming. We will share some ideas on how DS can help meet the needs of our diverse learners.
If you plan to attend please IM Beth Kohnke, so we can get a head count and plan accordingly. Hope to see you there.”
