Happy 1/2 Birthday to DEN in SL

Thanks to Lor for putting together this Animoto video.

October 28th Reminder

Get a Voki now!

WE NEED YOU!!!

OK…so you’ve seen the wonderful things that are happening at DEN in SL.  All these events are in large part due to the tremendous effort put forth by the DEN in SL LC.  We will continue bringing you events and workshops and galas, etc.  BUT…WE NEED YOUR HELP!  We are in need of some DENizens who would be willing to volunteer some of their time to make sure that there is an ‘avatar presence’ in the DEN in SL HQs to help answer questions, guide people, basically meet and greet.  PLEASE consider this wonderful opportunity to participate in a DEN Council (right from your own home to boot!).

If you think you’d like to give it a try (we promise it’ll be painless! LOL), please e-mail Geekie Kidd at cchausis@gmail.com Please put ‘DENizen Volunteer’ in the ‘Subject’ line.   Geekie will contact you with further info.  And don’t worry if you think you’re too ‘new’ to SL to help — you AREN’T.  And remember, the LC will provide you with all the support you need.

Be a ‘Good DENizen’ — VOLUNTEER NOW!!!

Costume Shopping in SL

As you get ready for the upcoming Costume Party at DEN in SL on October 28th, I thought I’d post some costume shopping information.  Mind you, this information comes from our very own LC Chair, Riptide Furse, who posted this info on the Google Groups page (see why you need to sign up to belong?!?)

MIA mall has costumes designed by Ayla Holt at very good prices. Look for the stores
Men in Action and White Lilly at opposites ends of the mall. Both have the same
costumes. http://slurl.com/secondlife/MIA/69/13/30

Heroes Unlimited has superhero costumes and more including Star Trek.
Many of the costumes come with gadgets and animation overriders
so your avatar really does look and act like the person.
Both male and female versions are available in many cases.

Vindi Vindaloo has period costumes at her stores.

Nicky Ree has superhero to astronaut costumes. The orange astronaut costume at the front of the store is a freebie.

Grendel’s Children doesn’t sell costumes but avatars. Non Human avatars! You can be a butterfly,
scorpion, spider, robotic werewolf and many more. The store is beautifully designed and huge.
Most of the avatars are pennies. I’m talking L$5-L$50.

Second Life Heroes contains super hero costumes and AVs from the hit TV show Heroes!

P.S. - you may be surprised to find some costume-like things in the library that
you were born into SL with — check out the library in your inventory
and see!

Education Fair a Success!

But seriously…did you have any doubts?  Check out the slideshow below to get any idea of the various activities going on from 1 p.m. SLT until ???   The ONLY glitch was when the sim crashed at around 1:45 SLT.  Not sure what happened, but within minutes I was able to return.  Since I was teaching a workshop and then had a RL obligation and couldn’t stay, I’m going to ask my LC to fill in the blanks by posting comments below on their impression of EduIsland II’s first (and by no means last!!!) Education Fair.

To Twit or Not to Twit

So I digress from the usual DEN in SL related posts here, but heh, I can do that!  Here’s the deal, I keep reading about the wonders of Twitter, how you can pose a question and w/in minutes you’ll get responses, etc.  Steve Dembo made such a compelling (and impressive display) argument for the use of Twitter during the Florida DEN Summer Institute that I decided this was one application I needed to explore.  It’s been three months, and frankly (and no offense to you Twitter fans out there), I just DON’T GET IT!  I’m ready to give it up….but not yet.

Here are the issues I have:

1.  It took me a while to figure out WHY I would post but not get any responses (that’s when I realized that I could follow 1,235 people, but unless they followed me they wouldn’t see my postings — :( )

2.  Unless you’re following (and being followed) by the people you’re following (are you ‘following’ me??? – I actually believe I’ve just lost myself! LOL) you won’t fully be able to follow the conversations.  Case in point, if someone does @hinkypink and you’re not following/being followed by hinkypink you’ll be totally out of the loop as to what that conversation was about.

3.  Don’t know if it’s my browser or my computer, but my Twitter doesn’t automatically update itself.  So unless I keep ‘clicking’ refresh I won’t know what’s going on.

4.  No offense, but I really couldn’t care less that you just ate a cheese pizza with a coke….as far as I’m concerned, if you have to Twit about that, you need to take a real close look at how you spend your time!

5.  How much more multi-tasking can one REALLY do effectively?  How many windows do YOU have open at your computer at this moment?

6.  Twitter is blocked at my school — which is when I would find it most effective.

With all that said….I DO believe that there is GREAT potential for Twitter on a professional level.  So….here’s the deal.  I’m willing to stay w/ Twitter until the end of the year, BUT I’m gonna need your support.  We DENers are a fabulous source of information and often go out of our way to help another DENer in need.  I would like to put together a list of DENers who are on Twitter.  I then promise to post this list (more details as to exact location to follow) so that we ALL have ACCESS to EACH OTHER on Twitter.  It’s just one more way for DENers to connect to each other.  If you would like to be added to the list, simply e-mail me at nancy.sharoff@gmail.com, PLEASE put in the ‘Subject’ line: ‘Twitter’, and the body of the email provide me with your name, your Twitter username, and the state you’re from. I’ll accept names for this list until October 30th.

Thanks…..

Forgive Me…

I’m sorry, but the DEN in SL has the BEST LC around…I mean, which other LC do YOU know of whose Chair (male) will go shopping with the Blogger (female) and not complain?  Not only that, but obliged me when I pleaded with him to try on some clothes?  I went in SL to create a notecard for tomorrow’s workshop which I’m hosting at the Education Fair on EduIsland II (DON’T FORGET!!!  See previous post for agenda.).  Ran into a ‘little’ problem getting my box to give out the notecard.  IMed Riptide (LC Chair) who was kind enough to join me and literally saved my *** (I CAN’T thank you enough Rip, but don’t worry I’ll find a way! LOL).  When that problem was resolved, I took him to take a look at some dogs at Zooby’s on Alope (161, 48, 21).  I already own the most adorable dachsund, but I found out that they’ve got some sculpties that will follow you around (and even fly when you do! How COOL is that!), bark, growl, sit, etc., and I wanted to check them out.  Then I remembered that Nicky Ree (FABULOUS designer) was having a BIG BIG BIG SALE for the opening of her new store on Tropical Orchid (126, 139, 32) and since I LOVE her clothes, well, I just HAD to go.  Needless to say I barely made it onto the sim it was that packed.  Rip kept trying to tp in, and finally succeed.  All the beautiful people were there dancing away.  It was awesome.  I tangoed a bit with Hason Pfeffer (swore he was a model), who won my heart with the following pick up line, “Do you know you wearing my favorite color?”  I mean, how could I ignore that?  Anyway…finally met up with Rip and we’re walking around looking at the various clothes.  I beg him to try some on, and sure enough, HE DID!!!  Sorry Rip, but I’ve got to show the world….what a true sport you are!  Here are some shots of Rip trying on one of Nicky Ree’s (sorry, Nicky! LOL) sarong outfits.  (Mind you, he lost a sneaker along the way, and I’m not sure whether he had shaved his legs!)

I swear…we just have too much time on our hands!!!!

Gentle Reminder - Education Fair on EduIsland II Tomorrow!

Good Morning!  It’s 5 a.m. and I’m WIDE awake!  I know I’m a ‘morning person’, but this is ridiculous!

Here’s a gentle reminder that EduIsland II is hosting an Education Fair tomorrow, Saturday, from 1 p.m. SLT to 3:30 p.m. SLT (though with a dance floor out, the fair my go for a while longer! LOL).  There are two sets of workshop session, see below for the agenda.  Hope to see you there!

Happy Birthday JessieMarie!

JM, Rip, and I were hanging at the DEN in SL HQs earlier today checking out all our purchases for the upcoming Costume Party.

Rip & JM Hanging Out

As we’re playing around and ‘oohing’ and ‘aahing’ we discussed the fact that not all schools have the day off today.  That’s when JM announced that it was wonderful to give everyone the day off for her birthday.  No sooner had she mentioned it and we congratulated her on the event (after determining that it was her RL, not SL, bday), Rip whips out of his inventory a bday cake! (Now, who do you know that would have one of these in their inventories! LOL)
Happy Bday JM

And as soon as he makes the cake appear, JM proceeds to make a wish (an SL wish of course). You can see her here typing in her wish!

JM Making an SL Bday Wish

So if you see JM in-world today, or happen to catch her on Twitter be sure to wish her a HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

You’re looking good gurl!  And I hope that all your wishes (SL and RL) come true!

Join DEN in SL Google Groups

I’ve posted some code to get a ‘ribbon’ across the top to remind ALL of you to join our DEN in SL Google Groups.  By joining the group you’ll find a gathering place for Discovery Educators (known as DENizens in SL). This group is set up to assist you as you explore Second Life. Have a question or a comment? Post it to the ^Discussions^ page. Have something you would like other DENizens to contribute to? Then ^Pages^ is the place for you to be. If you develop something that you would rather not have the ability to be edited, try putting it in ^Files^. This is YOUR space and we want YOUR input.,
